  • CLASS DEFINITION
  • An HR Specialist I perform employee selection, classification and compensation or employee benefits work of a limited nature. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
  • Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in an office where there are no uncomfortable or hazardous working conditions. Work requires mínimal physical exertion.
  • SELECTION PROCESS
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION: Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university


  • AND

  • EXPERIENCE:
Have one year of experience in one of the following fields: employee selection, position classification and compensation or employee benefits work

  • OR
  • NOTES EQUIVALENCIES:

Have one year of graduate course work in psychology, personnel administration, business administration, public administration, public policy or statistics from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience requirement on a year for year basis.

Additional experience in employee selection, position classification and compensation, employee benefits, training/organizational development or human resource administration may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.- REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES- Knowledge of English usage, grammar and writing techniques.


  • Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of personnel administration.
  • Knowledge of terminology and job content of a variety of occupations.
  • Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to collect and compile data using basic statistical analysis.
  • Ability to analyze unemployment insurance claims cases to determine their validity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgement.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, city officials and the general public
