About the Position - Library Services Assistant
Temporary, Part-time - Sabbatical Replacement - Runs August 9, 2024 through a January 15, 2025 Approximately 15 hours per week (three days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)


The Library Services Assistant reports to the Library Services Specialist. They provide a welcoming and helpful presence at the library circulation desk, maintaining an atmosphere conducive to study. They facilitate circulation, processing, cataloging, and promotion of library materials. Our library is the hub of a community of avid readers. The Library Services Specialist contributes to the maintenance of an excellent collection of materials, both physical and electronic, to support students in pursuing their academic and personal goals and interests. They answer reference questions and support students and employees in conducting research. They collaborate in support of activities and programs that promote student belonging and engagement. The Library Services Assistant contributes to communications in support of the library program, developing materials for both physical and digital distribution. The Library Services Assistant coordinates with a team of parent and student volunteers. The Library Services Assistant's typical hours are 8:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. and will work three days a week each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Contributes to tasks and projects related to all elements of the library program
  • Provides a welcoming presence at the Reference and Circulation desk
  • Monitors student behavior in the library, maintaining a positive atmosphere for collaborative and independent study
  • Answers reference questions and supports student and faculty research and use of library materials, including print and digital resources
  • Contributes to readers' advisory services
  • Supports circulation of library materials, including overdue reports
  • Contributes to ongoing development and weeding of the collection
  • Processes new materials, including assisting with cataloging and classification
  • Maintains appealing library displays; contributes to shelving and shelf reading
  • Creates content for social media to promote library materials and goals
  • Collaborates with parent volunteers and student assistants (TAs)
  • Other libraryrelated tasks as assigned

Key Qualifications:


  • Experience in Library Information Sciences preferred but not required. Current LIS students encouraged to apply
  • Prior experience working with groups of children and teens strongly preferred
  • Recognize the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in the context of the social and emotional development of young adults
  • Ability to maintain a positive, welcoming atmosphere for students and faculty working in the library
  • Collaborative, able to work cohesively as a member of a team, and assist wherever needed
  • Flexible and adaptable to shifting priorities
  • Organized and detailoriented
This is non-exempt hourly position and the range $25 to $34 per hour.
