Job Objective:


Under the immediate direction of the Laboratory Phlebotomy/Processing Supervisor, the Certified Phlebotomist III performs various duties associated with specimen collection and processing for laboratory testing.

Duties include venipuncture and capillary draws, specimen handling, maintaining supplies, equipment operation, answering questions related to specimens and testing, and assisting with the training of new phlebotomists.

In addition, the Certified Phlebotomist III is assigned to patients that need to be re-drawn and assists with competency evaluations as needed.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


A. Certified Phlebotomist III

  • Collects laboratory specimens and performs venipuncture and capillary sticks on patients
  • Assists with the processing of laboratory specimens
  • Organizes laboratory orders by priority and specimen type for proper collection and handling of specimens
  • Operates the LIS and HIS as required for the position
  • Follows proper isolation techniques
  • Safely and effectively uses all necessary equipment
  • Cleans laboratory equipment, work surfaces and glassware
  • Receives and stocks supplies
  • Records temperatures and notifies appropriate Clinical Laboratory Scientist of outofrange values
  • Answers questions regarding test orders, specimen requirements and specimen availability
  • Demonstrates proper use of scripting techniques
  • Participates in Continuing Education for personal growth and maintenance of certificates and licenses
  • Assures completion of all yearly competency testing
  • Assists in training new phlebotomists
  • Demonstrates competence with computer downtime procedures
  • Assigned to patients that need to be redrawn
  • Assists with competency evaluations if needed
  • Ability to perform at least 12 draws per hour of average complexity

Non-Essential Duties:


  • Helps distribute supplies to other departments as needed
  • Transports specimens and supplies between the main hospital lab and satellite locations
  • Adds support to other laboratory staff as necessary

Education and Experience:
Education


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required

Experience

  • Certified Phlebotomist Ill — Two years of related phlebotomy experience with a minimum of six months at AVH is required
  • Experience with infants and pediatrics is required
  • Minimum of one year experience at an acute care hospital is desirable

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:


  • Possession of a current Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II license issued by the State of California Department of Public Health
