Summary


The adventure head is responsible for developing and implementing adventure activity curriculum and supervising activity counselors in areas including rock wall, low ropes, and nature activities.

The adventure head works under the direction of the activities coordinator. Before camp, the adventure head works with the activities coordinator and camp counselors to plan activities.

During camp, the activity head supports camp counselors in their department, schedules staff for each activity period, and coordinates with the other activity heads.

The adventure head lives in staff housing without campers and is expected to work for six days each week, with one 24-hour period off.

Minimum Requirements

  • 20 years of age
  • Relevant experience facilitating and managing youth activities
  • Experience with belaying, team building, and/or nature education
  • Ability to lead and teach others how to lead adventure activities
  • Ability to build authentic relationships with campers and staff from diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to: different races, ethnicities, abilities, socioeconomic statuses, sexual orientations, and gender identities and expressions
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical abilities to act swiftly in an emergency situation
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Uptodate COVID19 vaccination status
  • Must submit proof of a physical examination performed by a physician or similar health professional within the past two years
  • Must submit information for state and federal background checks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working as a part of a team
  • Professional or personal experience working with transgender & nonbinary people, especially youth
  • Strong communication skills, positive attitude, initiative, flexibility, dependability, creativity, and ability to work and problemsolve as a team player
  • Mental and physical ability to manage stressful situations, work well under pressure, and maintain a positive attitude while working long days on less sleep than accustomed to
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently
  • Ability and willingness to learn on the job in an environment that changes quickly
  • Understanding of self care
  • Ability to pass a swim test if choosing to swim while at camp

Description of Camp


Harbor Camps is a joyfully rambunctious camp It is a wonderful experience for many trans and gender non-binary youth and staff role models of all kinds.


It is important for every staff member to understand the essential nature of the Harbor Camps program and experience to ensure participation, with or without an accommodation.

You should be able to supervise campers at all times while on duty at camp, which is broadly described in the following:


  • A communal living situation that means actively socializing and being surrounded by other campers and staff from sun up to sun down;
  • Lots of active outdoor activities, such as sports, swimming, boating, rock climbing, archery, low ropes course, and similar activities that every camper must attend with a focus on collaboration and teamwork;
  • 3 daily meals in a dining hall or outdoor pavilion with up to 200 people who create a busy, bustling, and often loud environment, with excited talking, cheering, largegroup singing, and games;
  • A screenfree environment (during work hours) in which we disconnect from cell phones, video games, and the internet, and campers do not use devices during any part of the program day nor are campers permitted to wear headphones outside of the cabin; and
It is important to remember that by the nature of overnight camp:

  • You will likely have a lot less "alone time" than you might find at home.
  • Your schedule may change with little notice due to weather or other circumstances, and flexibility is key
  • You should feel ok being away from home and having an independent groupliving experience with a couple hundred other kids and staff.

Salary
For first-year Activity Heads,total gross salary for the dates listed above is $3,150 ($450/week), and includes room and board. All Activity Heads are eligible to receive a travel reimbursement up to $200.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend scheduled meetings and training events, including precamp training sessions.
  • Work with activities coordinator to develop department orientation for Camp Counselors
  • Make a schedule for camp counselors within the activity department
  • Oversee all Camp Counselors within the adventure department and support them as needed
  • Utilize one period each day as administrative preparation and for supervising activities within your activity area
  • Lead approximately one activity period each day
  • Meet with activities coordinator daily to discuss programming and camper/staff sche
