What you will do:


Responsibilities - Painter

  • Perform a variety of duties necessary to achieve a finish that satisfies VCE paint quality standards and engineering requirements
  • Use and follow prescribed safety procedures
  • Emphasize personal safety by employing the prescribed PPE to protect themself and others from hazards of the task. This ranges from splash protection in the wash booth to respirators and full body PPE in the spray booth
  • Operate Human Machine Interfaces (HMI's) on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's) to direct material through paint systems and adjust process operations such as choosing the best blast machine and program and selecting the right process options
  • Use of an overhead crane or conveyor lift station and employ rigging principles to safely move, manipulate, and hang a wide variety of heavy and awkward parts so that they can be cleaned and painted properly without damage
  • Duties may include operation of a forklift or tugger to move material for a multitude of situations
  • Operate pressure washers and or steam cleaners in a conscientious way to assure that oily contamination is removed and removing excess water to speed dry time
  • Replace and set up containers of chemical
  • Employ many different types of masking to protect sensitive surfaces from blast, and to keep surfaces free of paint as required by part design and/or an understanding of its function
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance tasks to assure troublefree blast machine operation
  • Employ a conscientious work ethic when removing abrasive after blast to minimize finish contamination
  • Look for questionable weld or metal quality after blast and escalate any nonconformance to supervisor
  • Set up paint for spraying, including moving drums as needed, adding reducer as required, stirring properly, making sure pressures are properly adjusted and keeping the mix area clean
  • Set up and adjust spray equipment, keep it clean and lubricated as needed for reliable operation, and assist with equipment maintenance
  • Operate electronic paint proportioning equipment
  • Properly mix paint with hardener by hand for repairs and special colors
  • Keep equipment and area free of unnecessary dirt by picking up debris and sweeping loose overspray
  • Keep cleaning solvent covered when not in use, and empty waste containers as needed and at shift end into proper containers
  • Remove masking, and be able to select the proper tap and driver for cleaning threaded holes
  • Look for a wide range of defects after paint and correct if able or escalate to supervisor
  • Detect and report faulty operation, defective material and unusual conditions to Supervisor
  • Interpret drawings and work instructions to determine paint quality or masking requirements
  • Drive completed machines as appropriate to facilitate paint repairs
  • Use computer systems for production reporting.

Skills Required:


  • Possess a thorough understanding of metal preparation to safely and effectively use the proper tools and/or chemicals to achieve the necessary cleanliness needed to assure coating adhesion
  • An understanding of the safe handling and use of hazardous chemicals
  • Ability to employ creative techniques when making repairs to make them look like new in a timely fashion
  • Knowledge of rigging to safely move and manipulate awkward and heavy parts
  • Ability to operate industrial electronic controllers

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 24 months experience in industrial or automotive painting in a production environment, preferably using high solids coating
