Building Inspector


Full-Time Position

Job Summary:


This is skilled, technical field inspection and code enforcement work in securing and maintaining regulatory compliance with municipal and other applicable codes and ordinances governing all phases of construction of commercial and residential structures.

Employees in this position are expected to be able to perform any and all work tasks and comply with any work schedules, attendance, or duty requirements which may be established by City or department rules.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Reviews, evaluates and checks architectural, building and engineering plans and specifications for construction related activities in the city to ensure regulatory compliance with building and safety codes, zoning ordinances and related requirements.
  • Inspects existing structures for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances and other safety criteria, recommends appropriate actions for structures which jeopardize the public health, safety or welfare and posts violation notices or stop work orders, as necessary.
  • Maintains current knowledge and awareness of regulatory changes and trends in the inspection and building code enforcement field through building code schools or conferences approved by the department.
  • Conducts inspections on construction, alteration and repair activities on residential, industrial and commercial building sites for compliance with approved plans and building and zoning requirements and other codes and standards.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records on inspection activities.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduate or GED equivalency. Experience as a building inspector, or in building construction as a craftsman, contractor, journeyman, builder, or supervisor.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Hold State of Florida license as an Inspector (BN) and/or Plan Reviewer (PX), with certification in one or more of the following disciplines: Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and/or Plumbing or Meet the requirements of state of Florida Statute for provisional certification
  • Preferred but not required to have a State Licensed Plan Reviewer / Inspector certification in one
- and two-family dwelling

  • High School diploma or equivalent education
  • Valid State Driver's license
  • Thorough knowledge of municipal, state, regional and national regulatory codes and ordinances with respect to the construction, alteration and repair of residential, industrial and commercial structures and of the principles and practices of the building inspection and code enforcement field.
  • Considerable knowledge and skill in the detection of possible defects and faults in building construction and of stages in construction where these conditions are most readily ascertained and remedied.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex building construction blueprints, plans and specifications and to compile, summarize and document information and data relative to each inspection.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality and make sound wellinformed recommendations when necessary.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, architects, contractors and the general public as necessitated by the work.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Necessary Special Requirements:


An employee in this class must possess, or within six (6) months of position assignment obtain, a standard or provisional license from the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation for Building Inspections; thereafter, possession and maintenance of same.

Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License.

If assigned duties require the use of a personal motor vehicle, an automobile insurance policy that meets the minimum requirements of liability established by the State of Florida for property damage and personal injury coverage must be maintained.


Public Contact:


Contacts are an essential component of this position and are for the purpose of obtaining and furnishing information, providing interpretations, responding to complaints as assigned, and similar purposes.

Work may involve considerable public contact and usually requires the incumbent to interact with the public, various City departments, and governmental agencies, as needed.

Work requires an employee of this class to present oneself in a courteous, tactful, and effective manner.


Pay:
$46, $93,500.00 per year
