    Default job background
    Description

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism (Department of Medicine) at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking candidates for an Open Rank position on the tenure-ineligible Clinical Faculty track.

Rank will be commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will primarily provide clinical care for neuroendocrine/pituitary patients in the Pituitary Clinic.

The successful candidate must have specialized knowledge and experience in neuroendocrinology and pituitary disease and demonstrate a strong commitment to medical education.

A commitment to scholarship/quality improvement and health equity will be viewed favorably. Opportunities to participate in funded research may also be available. Individuals from underrepresented-in-medicine groups are highly encouraged to apply.

Candidates must have an MD or equivalent degree and must be ABIM board-eligible/certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism by the appointment start date.

UVA endocrinologists Mary Lee Vance, MD, and Michael O. Thorner, MBBS, along with neurosurgeon Edward R. Laws, MD, founded the multidisciplinary Pituitary Tumor Program in 1992. Before and after Laws's 2006 departure, the program recruited accomplished neurosurgeons such as John A. Jane Jr., MD, and the late Edward H. Oldfield, MD. Now entering its fourth decade, multidisciplinary Pituitary Tumor Program is currently led by Drs. Mary Lee Vance, Gregory Hong, and John A.

Jane, Jr., and includes medical endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, ENT specialists, neuropathologists, neuro-ophthalmologists, neuro-oncologists, neuroradiologists, interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, and therapists.

The Pituitary Tumor Program sees approximately 500 new patients and performs over 200 pituitary surgeries each year.

Diagnostic expertise includes the full array of hormone analysis, provocative/dynamic hormone testing, imaging (e.g., MRI, CT), inferior petrosal sinus sampling, and neuropathology.

Surgical techniques employed include transsphenoidal microsurgery, endoscopic surgery, extended transsphenoidal skull-base approaches, and craniotomy when indicated. Substantial surgical volumes have yielded an excellent history of results for transsphenoidal operations at UVA. The Pituitary Tumor Program also maintains substantial expertise in medical therapy, conventional radiotherapy, and gamma knife radiosurgery.

Since 1989, the Lars Leksell Center for Gamma Surgery at UVA Health has treated more than 10,000 patients, including over 600 patients with pituitary tumors.

The Division currently has 35 faculty members (10 full professors, 6 associate professors, 10 assistant professors, 4 nurse practitioners, and 6 emeritus professors) and 6 endocrine fellows.

The Division includes current and previous leaders in national professional societies including three former presidents of the Endocrine Society, a former president of the American Diabetes Association, and a former president of the Pituitary Society.
