- Act as direct supervisor to Counselors and Senior Counselors.
- Observe counselors performance in order to make appropriate improvements.
- Report observations regarding staff performance to Camp Director and Assistant Director at meetings and informally, as needed.
- Provide ongoing verbal feedback to Counselors regarding their performance, positive and negative.
- Write reviews of staff performance and discuss findings with staff during scheduled supervisory conferences.
- Help to resolve conflicts among staff members and/or campers with the assistance of the Camp Director and/or Assistant Director.
- Provide support to Counselors when needed.
- Confront problems or concerns with staff in a constructive manner.
- Establish and maintain a positive relationship with staff so they can accept instruction.
- Delegate necessary tasks to staff.
- Understand tasks required of Counselors.
- Teach skills to Counselors as needed and assess implementation of new skills.
- Ensure that Counselors are following their daily schedules with the campers (arriving at activities on time, etc).
- Keep Counselors informed about changes in the schedule.
- Assist with planning and implementation of activities as needed including specialty activities such as swimming, Electives, evening activities, Olympics, Arts Week, etc.
- Participate in staff training and help deliver parts of the staff training during training week; reinforce staff training during the camp season.
- Assist with arrangements for transportation of supplies and distribution/storage of supplies at camp.
- Participate in the end-of-summer inventory process to plan for what is needed next summer.
- Assist during camper transportation to/from camp, supervise campers while on the bus, assist with bus loading/unloading at camp.
- Help to implement camp mission, vision and goals as well as the camp policies and procedures.
- Assist with oversight of the CIT program.
- Serve as an exemplary role model for all camp staff.
- Assist with end-of-camp clean up and packing process.
- Assist with planning and implementing a successful Open House event during week 3 of camp.
- Participate in end-of-camp staff evaluation process and camper questionnaire process.
- Enforce safety and health regulations.
- Assists in responding to emergencies in a manner consistent with camp safety policy and procedures.
- Regular and punctual time and attendance, and adherence to The Foundlings and your departments specific time and attendance policies and protocol.
- Consistent demonstrated commitment to The Foundlings BHAG, mission, vision and values (Compassion, Dignity, Family and Community, Diversity, Excellence).
- Adherence to The Foundlings employee policies, Code of Conduct and applicable rules, laws, regulations or bargaining agreements.
- All other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned.
- HS diploma or GED required, Bachelors degree preferred.
- Must have experience working with children in a summer camp, preferably at Camp Felix, and/or experience working with children in an educational setting.
- Must have supervisory experience.
- Must be energetic and enthusiastic, and a team player.
- Must be a hands-on worker and serve as a positive example to campers and staff.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Must be able to encourage and support staff while providing constructive criticism and acknowledgement when appropriate.
- Must be able to work independently assessing what needs to be done and taking action.
- Must be able to delegate to staff.
- Must be able to create a positive relationship with counselors and staff members.
- Exhibit qualities such as patience, kindness, honestly, responsibility, compassion, and desire to help others.
- Knowledge of or familiarity with the issues/needs of children involved in the child welfare system preferred.
- Updated First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
- Must be committed to the Camp Felix goals and regulations
- Must be able to handle a crisis in a calm and effective manner.
- Must be available for training week/weekend and all 2 weeks of camp

We help children and families navigate through and beyond foster care. We help families struggling with conflict and poverty grow strong. We help individuals with developmental disabilities live their best lives, and we help our neighbors access quality health and mental health servicescore to building lifelong resilience and wellbeing. Together, our interrelated programs provide a whole-person, whole-family, and whole-life approach that unlocks solutions for a lifetime.
The Unit Leader works under direct supervision of the Assistant Director to achieve Camp Felix goals and objectives by assisting with supervision of a camp program that helps campers build positive relationships, improve their self-esteem, develop healthy habits and learn new skills.
Responsibilities:Camp Felix is a sleepaway camp, Monday through Friday while camp is in session.
Mandatory Staff Training: July 30 - August 2 in Manhattan | August 3 and 4 onsite in Sandyston, NJ (transportation provided)
Camp Sessions:
August 5 - August 9
August 12 - August 16
Salary: $900/week
