BASIC PURPOSE
Reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Site Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of the Playground Pals, Summer Lunch, and Summer Day Camp Programs and will work at one of three elementary schools within the North Thurston Public School District. These positions will work 20-40 hours per week from approximately the end of June to the middle of August, with additional hours for program planning/setup, and staff training. The Parks, Culture and Recreation Department offers a wide variety of youth programs, including day camps during school breaks, a summer lunch program, and a summer playground pals program where free lunch is served along with games and great activities.
Playground Pals: This program is offered in conjunction with the Summer Lunch Program. Children ages 6 to 12 can come for lunch and then stay for Playground Pals. On site staff provide structured play and craft activities, along with special guests and events.
Summer Lunch Program: This program is operated in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). During school summer break, nutritious hot lunches and afternoon snacks are provided at no cost to children 18 years of age and younger.
Summer Day Camp: The department offers a fun and safe day camp experience for youth, ages 6 to 12, during the summer and over school breaks. Weekly camps are theme-oriented and packed with creative and healthy outdoor activities, including field trips, swimming, sports, group games, arts and crafts, special guests, and events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These duties include but are not limited to the following:
+ Plans, schedules, develops, and coordinates the programs, as well as, supervises program participants on site under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor.
+ Assists with scheduling, supervising, and training of program staff.
+ Secures and accommodates guest speakers/volunteers and handles arrangements for field trips, swimming, and daily activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
Minimum of 21 years of age.
+ A High school diploma or G.E.D.
+ Any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the job.
PREFERRED:
+ An educational background in recreation, education, and/or child development.
+ One (1) year experience in planning, programming, and supervising recreational and/or educational activities for children in a school, camp, or recreational setting.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSE(S):
+ Must pass a thorough City background investigation.
+ Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
+ Must be attentive to job safety considerations and follows all required safety policies, procedures and techniques.
+ Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier OR must be able to provide own transportation to and from job, meetings, and related job sites.
+ Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
+ Must possess valid First Aid and CPR certifications, OR the ability to obtain before the program begins.
+ Must possess a valid Food Handler's certification, OR the ability to obtain before the program begins.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
+ Conflict management/resolution, including parent/child relationships.
+ Various sports, games, arts and crafts, and cooperative group activities.
+ First Aid and the procedures for bloodborne pathogens.
Skill in:
+ Training and directly supervising and managing staff members and/or volunteers.
+ Working with children in a caring and patient manner.
+ Greeting the public and explaining all program information readily and thoroughly.
+ Taking the time to ensure that messages are easily understood.
+ Portraying an image of knowledge, confidence, professionalism, fairness, and caring.
+ Dressing appropriately and clean, as a result the City and Parks, Culture and Recreation profession are portrayed in a positive, "service" related manner.
Ability to:
+ Effectively interact with the public and City staff in a courteous manner at all times.
+ Communicate effectively and in an engaging manner, both orally and in writing.
+ Ability to plan, schedule, develop, and coordinate the programs.
+ Work in a team setting.
Part-time positions that work less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance. The City will comply with RCW and WAC's through in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt).
Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages.
*Please note, that Part-time and On-call positions, working less than than an average of 20 hours per week, are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
