Position Description:
Security Officer


The Security Officer will primarily provide protection and safety for the Museum visitors, staff, collections, and building, all with the overall goal of enhancing safety and security.


Essential Functions

  • Continually patrol exhibition galleries (minimum of 5 hours walking)
  • Report pre and post inspection results daily while on patrol throughout the building
  • Patrol unsecured areas of the building as assigned
  • Respond to emergency situations quickly
  • Monitor alarm and CCTV systems, requires both prolonged sitting, good visual and verbal skills
  • Respond to, assess, and notify proper authorities in alarm situations
  • Monitor catering staff and guests during day and evening special events. This includes proper checkin/out of all visitors, to insure safety and security of the Museum.
  • Sign staff in/out and visually search packages and personnel leaving the building
  • Secure the building after all staff have left. This includes looking for safety/fire issues, anything suspicious, alarming the building and communicating with the alarm company.
  • Assume responsibility for building, contents and staff during nonpublic hours
  • Offer assistance to visitors and make them feel welcome
  • Assist with mailroom and shipping/receiving duties
  • Communicate both verbally and in written form
  • Create a team spirit and enhance communication so that staff members will work collaboratively and in a supportive manger across departmental and functional area boundaries
  • Contribute to and promote a positive culture at CHM and be a good ambassador for CHM at all times.
  • Contribute to a culture that extends quality customer service to CHM's audiences to ensure they feel welcome, safe, and comfortable, and to colleagues through being courteous, responsive, and supportive of the work of others.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Security experience preferably in a museum or educational environment
  • Successful completion of minimum 20hour basic training course as provided by section 28 of the Private Detective and Private Security Act of 1983 and section of the Illinois Criminal Code of 196
  • Training in CPR and first aid procedures
  • Must be able to pass background investigation; must maintain an operating cell phone
  • Tact in dealing with staff, researchers and visitors; patience with children and senior citizens
  • Stamina, strength and dexterity in the feet and legs to continually walk assigned posts and ascend/descend stairs while performing normal patrol responsibilities or during emergency evacuation situations. Brisk walking or jogging might be needed to answer a call for help.
  • Ability to relocate heavy wheeled carts, place and secure scissor gate in front of galleries when closed, setup and take down stanchions with rope barricades and move directive signs, both inside and outside, using a 2wheeled hand truck or dolly.
  • Keenness of vision, memory for detail and procedures, and good observation skills.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including evening functions and mandatory overtime hours on short notice.
  • Ability to handle pressure and make quick, accurate decisions
  • Consistently perform job duties throughout the shift with or without supervision
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in written form with good grammar, friendliness, and firmness.
  • Capable of original thinking and planning
  • Clean and neat appearance
  • Commitment to the mission, values, and programs of the Chicago History Museum
