    Job Description:
    REPOSTED - OPEN UNTIL FILLED


    The primary responsibilities of the Director of Counseling and Psychological Wellness Services are to provide direct psychological services to the students at SUNY Old Westbury, oversee the day-to-day functionality of counseling services, and to coordinate clinical aspects of counseling services in a collaborative environment with professional University colleagues.

    The Director is expected to adhere to all legal and ethical standards of practice governing professional licensure in New York State.

    Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director's specific duties include but are not limited to:


    • Responsible for the overall leadership, administration and range of counseling center services.
    • Oversees all clinical services, including management of wait-list and scheduling, administration of the online appointment request system (including designing the form content, assigning students to counselors, referring students out, and troubleshooting and responding to any questions), increasing access to appointments overall and reduction of wait times for both triage and intakes, and managing crisis situations.
    • Directly supervises the center's staff including full and part time clinicians, pre-doctoral externs and administrative staff. Lead staff meetings and provide for professional development trainings.
    • Provides direct services to SUNY Old Westbury students, including brief individual and group psychotherapy and crisis intervention. Conducts mental health assessments and make recommendations regarding students' substance use and psychological welfare. Keeps accurate and current records of all activities, including clinical records.
    • Manages crisis intervention and response protocol. Facilitates transfers, referrals and follow-ups to external service providers, including hospitals and specialized treatment centers.
    • Monitors student usage and follow-up related to the afterhours emergency counseling and crisis management hotline service.
    • Oversees psychometric testing program for students in accordance with protocols and procedures of the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (OSSD).
    • Reviews and oversees the processing of non-academic aspects of student withdrawals and mental health leaves of absence.
    • Serves on the University's Multi Dimension Team providing mental health consultation/collaboration with members.
    • Serves on the Students of Concern Committee.
    • Serves on the Threat Assessment Team.
    • Monitors standards of clinical service excellence to ensure increased access and supports for marginalized/under-served student population.
    • Works collaboratively within the Division of Student Affairs and other University Departments. This includes consultation and training for staff and faculty.
    • Represents the department to the larger campus community, including students, faculty, and staff.
    • Establishes long and short-range departmental goals and objectives and devises methods to improve the overall effectiveness of counseling programs. Utilizes assessment in the evaluation of services and shares outcome data with the Division of Student Affairs and campus community.
    • Develops and submits budget recommendations, monitors, verifies and reconciles expenditures of budgeted funds.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A doctorate in counseling/clinical psychology, counseling or equivalent.
    • A minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years post licensure experience in a clinical/counseling position.
    • Strong commitment and experience with diverse, under-represented populations.
    • Currently licensed or license eligible as a psychologist in the state of New York. (Must maintain licensure throughout the duration of employment.)
    • Supervisory and management experience.
    • Must be available for afterhours and weekends as needed for emergency counseling and crisis management.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working with college-age students.
    • Experience working with high-risk individuals.
    • Evidence of strong record of clinical skills, therapeutic treatment, and crisis interventions.
    • Awareness of current legal issues, ethical standards and best practices related to mental health care delivery.
    • Experience using an Electronic Medical Record System.
    • Experience in highly collaborative environment and effectively working with University colleagues on behalf of student wellbeing and success.

    Additional Information:
    This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit (UUP).

    This title is in Appendix A of the SUNY Policies of the Board of Trustees and, as a consequence, incumbents serving in this title are not eligible for permanent appointment (tenure), but instead receive five-year renewable term appointments.
