- Review customer requirements to understand design criteria, schedule, and budget for establishing appropriate design guidelines. Assess and interpret customer design specifications, apply design codes and standards to ensure compliance with approved criteria.
- Conduct calculations using various tools such as RCS system, PV Elite/Code Calc, and/or Compress to determine suitable designs for heat exchangers and vessels from initial concept to fabrication.
- Evaluate mechanical systems and products through research programs, applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials.
- Create engineering drawings adhering to relevant codes, engineering practices, and company standards; develop technical specifications, design calculations, and analytical solutions.
- Prepare a Bill of Materials (BOM) for the Purchasing Department.
- Choose appropriate welding procedures for heat exchanger fabrication and assist in obtaining approval for their use.
- Engage with customers to provide engineering support.
- Participate in pre-fabrication meetings with clients.
- Demonstrate adaptability in responding to unexpected changes in project scope or deadlines. Prioritize tasks effectively to manage deadlines without impacting workflow.
- Support Chief Engineer and Production Managers with new and repair projects.
- Review job assignments with Chief Engineer upon allocation.
- Verify drawings against design calculations, customer drawings, and applicable codes.
- Conduct necessary layouts to confirm dimensions.
- Perform final Quality Inspections on all drawings.
- Revise drawings based on Chief Engineer's feedback after design reviews.
- Provide manufacturing support; develop CNC programs, manage document control, and collaborate with workshop staff.
- Perform other assigned duties as needed.

Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Torrance, California
Employment Type: Full Time - Direct Hire
Salary Range: $85,000 - $125,000, Depending on Experience
Basic Function:
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for performing engineering calculations, creating or updating fabrication and repair drawings for custom-designed shell and tube heat exchangers. Involved in the entire machine design process from initial concept to fabrication to ensure that customized equipment meets or exceeds client expectations. Collaborates with the rest of the team to develop innovative solutions that fulfill design specifications and address any issues with current and new designs.
Responsibilities:
Qualifications:
Education: B.S. degree in a related engineering discipline.
Knowledge: Proficiency in machine design and fabrication of shell and tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, or similar custom-engineered equipment is required. Familiarity with ASME code, especially section VIII and IX, is essential. Competence in computer-aided design and thermal design is advantageous.
Skills: Strong engineering abilities in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, and Statics are crucial. Understanding technical specifications and requirements is necessary. Proficiency in advanced math is vital. Capability in areas such as probability, statistics, geometry, and trigonometry is important. Demonstrated self-motivation and urgency are key qualities. Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential. Solid problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills are required. Proven initiative in enhancing personal and interpersonal skills and collaborating effectively across all levels and departments is expected.
