autism and neuroscience; life sciences; mathematical and physical sciences; and science, society and culture. The Flatiron Institute, our internal research organization, advances scientific research through computational methods, tools and analysis. Our offices are in the heart of New York City's Flatiron District.

The Opportunity

This role reports to the director of digital communications and works closely with the senior science writer and editor. This full-time staff position requires working on-site four days a week in our New York City office. (This position does not involve journalistic work for _Quanta_ or _The Transmitter_, two editorially independent publications under the Simons Foundation umbrella.)


Responsibilities:

  • Work with scientists to understand their research and transform it into compelling narratives for both peer-to-peer and general audiences.
  • Partner with graphic artists, photographers and videographers to help determine the best way to illustrate stories.
  • Collaborate across grantmaking and research teams to identify communications and storytelling opportunities.
  • Contribute to projects, including the annual report, video series and web projects.

Qualifications:


  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of science writing experience or a master's degree in science writing and communications or journalism and at least 1 to 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills, along with published examples of work.
  • The ability to interpret and explain science in engaging ways for a sophisticated audience and a broader readership.
  • The ability to work on deadline and manage multiple writing assignments and projects.
  • Familiarity with academia, scientific journal publications, scientific research institutions and/or science journalism is preferred. An academic or research background in science would also be an asset.
  • Experience writing about neuroscience and/or biology is a plus, as is multimedia storytelling and data visualization experience.


Compensation and Benefits- The full-time annual compensation range for the Science Writer level is $85,000 - $95,000, depending on experience.- The full-time annual compensation range for the Senior Science Writer level is $95,000 - $110,000, depending on experience.- In addition to competitive salaries, the Simons Foundation provides employees with an outstanding benefits package.
