    of Social Work student applications for the position of paid part-time Post-Conviction Project Legal Intern at the Wilbanks Child Endangerment and Sexual Exploitation (CEASE) Clinic.

    The position requires a one-year commitment, beginning January 2024 through December 2024.


    The CEASE Clinic, located in downtown Athens, represents survivors of child sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking in juvenile court dependency proceedings, civil lawsuits, and post-conviction vacatur and record restriction matters.


    This internship is funded through a partnership with Georgia's Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) to develop and coordinate intake, legal and non-legal representation, and training for pro bono attorneys and other advocates in order to assist survivors of trafficking to vacate criminal convictions that were a direct result of their victimization and/or restrict records of criminal convictions that occurred while a survivor was being trafficked, as permitted under the Survivor's First Act of 2020.


    Under the supervision of CEASE's Staff Attorney and Social Work Advocate, legal and social work interns will assist in building the post-conviction project through research, training curriculum development, and community outreach and education.

    Interns will assist in developing intake policies and protocols and reaching out to prison social workers and mental health professionals for the purpose of building relationships and setting up intake clinics.

    Interns will assist in building a network of pro bono attorneys and other advocates, as well as in training and technical assistance for advocates providing pro bono representation to survivors seeking post-conviction relief.

    Interns will travel to state prisons to complete survivor intakes under staff supervision and work with various public, private, local, and statewide agencies to connect survivors to pro bono attorneys, advocates, and other survivor resources and services.


    Legal and Social Work interns will engage in interdisciplinary practice under CEASE staff supervision to ensure the provision of holistic and trauma-responsive advocacy for survivors.

    Legal interns will assist in direct legal representation of clients under CEASE attorney supervision and in accordance with the Supreme Court of Georgia's Student Practice Act.

    Legal interns will work on all phases of litigation brought on behalf of survivors including but not limited to client intake, discovery, document drafting, client representation and other practical litigation skills.

    Social work interns will provide case management, non-legal advocacy, referrals, and other supportive services to survivors under the Social Work Advocate's supervision.

    This is a grant-funded position.

    Continuation of employment is expressly subject to continued support from external funding sources, and the position currently has funding through December 31, 2024.

    Students should be able to commit to, at a minimum, the following 2024 work schedule:

    Spring 2024 Semester: 10-15 hours per week

    Summer 2024 Break: 35 hours per week

    Fall 2024 Semester: 10-15 hours per week

    Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

    At least one semester completed and in good academic standing at an accredited social work program.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

    Excellent and professional written and oral communication; Self-directed, but also able to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary office; Working knowledge of trauma-responsive care and services; Ability to manage time and workflow efficiently in order to balance more than one project/case at a time; Knowledge and skills about engagement and assessment of clients; Ability to establish and maintain rapport with survivors and community partners; Knowledge of NASW Code of Ethics; Interest or background in survivor advocacy, legal systems, or interdisciplinary practice


    Not required, but preferred:

    Ability to conduct a comprehensive literature review; Ability to assess quality and appropriateness of intake policies and procedures, training curriculum, and technical assistance efforts; Ability to assess quality of clinic services and project outcomes.
