    Description
    The Cowardin Lab in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a Lab Technician to assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the lab under Dr. Cowardin's supervision.

    The lab technician will work closely with Dr. Cowardin and other lab members, using microbiological and immunological techniques to study the gut microbiome and its interactions with the maternal and infant immune system. Research activities will include, but not be limited to, bacterial culture and sequencing, preparation and maintenance of gnotobiotic/germ-free mice, isolation of samples from mice, cell and protein quantification (by flow cytometry and ELISA) and general molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation, RT-PCR). The lab technician will also contribute to laboratory maintenance. These duties include assisting Dr. Cowardin with environmental health and safety compliance as well as compliance with the animal care and use committee guidelines, maintaining mouse colonies, maintaining supplies and preparing lab resources.

    A successful candidate should have the ability to provide support for projects within the lab, handle sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks, and operate with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures. Must be fluent in verbal and written communication and be culturally competent to work with individuals of varying backgrounds. The technician will help to support core lab values, including an appreciation for the diverse backgrounds of all lab members, a commitment to high quality, rigorous science, and a strong motivation to improve child health.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Lab and Research Technician 1
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Lab and Research Technician 2
  • Education: Associate's degree
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
  • This position will remain open until filled. This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.     Physical Demands:

    This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
