    The Academic Specialist, Math will collaborate with program administrators to develop, plan, and implement support services that result in enhanced academic performance, persistence, degree completion and transfer probability.

    The Academic Specialist, Math will provide learning strategies, instruction, academic and personal support to program participants.

    The position will assist in identifying tutorial needs and serve as an academic tutor for Math and other Stem-related courses.

    Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for teaching up to two developmental math courses throughout the year (Fall and Spring).

    Will work closely with the Coordinator, Developmental Math. Reports to the Director, TRIO Programs. This position is partially granted- funded.


    • Identify participants Math tutorial needs utilizing a variety of assessment tools and strategies.
    • Tutor participants in all facets of Math/Stem-related courses.
    • Routinely monitor and support the Tutor Lounge daily in support of academic assistance.
    • Serve as the subject matter expect in the development and facilitation of academic workshops, including but not limited to Math, College Success, Time Management, and Study Skills.
    • Ability to provide high-touch outreach and development of program participants.
    • Provide advising and mentoring services to program participants,
    • Coordinate and participate in TRIO-sponsored events as assigned.
    • Utilize technology to enhance programming and service delivery.
    • Maintain compliance with federal regulations governing the program to ensure all participants meet federal guidelines for program participation.
    • Utilize Management Information Systems (i.e., Blumen, Watermark, Colleague, TRIO Dashboard, etc.) to make informed decisions.
    • Provide detailed data-collection, record keeping, and reporting on math related outcomes for program participants.
    • Teach up to two developmental math courses per semester (Fall and Spring)
    • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet the diverse needs of students.
    • Ability to interpret and evaluate theories of the field or discipline taught.
    • Encourage the development of communication and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
    • Employ equitable teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students and maximize student learning outcomes.
    • Stay current in the subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, and workshops.
    • Ability to network and collaborate with campus stakeholders in support of program goals and objectives.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, often ambitious/demanding environment while maintaining agreed-upon work schedules and deliverables.
    • Serve on various committees as assigned by program director.
    • Other duties as assigned by program director.


    This position requires two years of experience in working with low-income/first-generation students; two years of experience advising or counseling individuals toward degree completion.

    Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with program participants and liaisons.

    Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present information effectively in group settings and one-on-one interactions.

    Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software. Cultural sensitivity and awareness of the challenges faced by individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Passion for promoting education as a means of empowerment and socio-economic advancement.


    • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or Mathematics related field is required.
    • Bachelor's degree with 18 semester hours in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a Mathematics related field is required.
    • Bachelor's degree in Education and three years of teaching experience in Mathematics or graduate training in remedial Education is required.
    • Demonstrated mastery in mathematical concepts and familiarity with computer-aided math is highly desired.

    Physical Requirements:
    Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines including computer, typewriter, calculator, copier, etc.

    Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

    Position involves sedentary work, which requires sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

    Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately twenty pounds.

    Data Conception:

    Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.


    Interpersonal Communication:
    Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the giving of instructions to students and the giving of assignments to assistants. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.

    Language Ability:
    Requires the ability to read a variety of documents and reports.

    Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports such as pre-registration/registration lists, ineligible programs list, general financial aid recipient report, detailed financial aid reports, program review report, etc., using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar.

    Requires the ability to communicate with co-workers, other College personnel, students, personnel from other colleges, etc., with poise, voice control, and confidence.


    Intelligence:

    Has the ability to apply rational systems such as accounting, counseling, personnel, etc., in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.


    Verbal Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.

    Numerical Aptitude:

    Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages and decimals; determine time and weight; apply algebraic principles; and apply descriptive statistics.


    Form/Spatial Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

    Motor Coordination:
    Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in utilizing automated office equipment.

    Manual Dexterity:
    Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

    Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:

    Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.


    Interpersonal Temperament:
    Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.

    Physical Communication:
    Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
