Summer Sleepaway 2024 at Camp Kaufmann

Counselor-in-Training (CIT)

Position Description

The Counselor-in-Training will assist Activity Specialists, Unit Managers, and Unit Counselors in the coordination and care of the campers and daily camp life.

They will act in accordance with the New York Department of Health (NYDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and the American Camp Association (ACA) standards while being passionate about the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.


Responsibilities

  • Serve as an important part of the team responsible for the health and safety of campers.
  • Assist with implementing activities that coincide with the weekly session theme.
  • Lead songs, games, and activities to meet the needs and interests of campers.
  • Participate in camp wide Kapers, including program area housekeeping, dining hall/kitchen duty, and flag ceremony support.
  • Participate in specialist and unit activities as well as CITspecific programming, such as the CIT Summer Service Project
  • Assist in the maintenance and care of all activity and unit supplies.
  • Help ensure that the camp meets ACA and NYSDOH standards.
  • Assist campers in emergency situations.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, team building, and debriefing.
  • Subscribe to the mission and values of Girl Scouts and be an active Girl Scout member.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all staff members, campers, caregivers, and other visitors to camp.
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and sound problemsolving techniques.
  • Model and teach good health practices for all staff and campers.
  • Excellent communicator, calm under pressure, and works as a team player.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding cleanliness, punctuality, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Comply with all personnel policies communicated in staff training and staff manual.
  • Meet and communicate with assigned supervisor daily.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the assigned supervisor, Assistant Camp Director, and Camp Director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be at least 16 years of age by July 1st, 202
  • Previous or current participation in CounselorinTraining program through Girl Scouts of Greater New York.
  • Able to provide a physical exam from a licensed doctor that occurred after Sept. 202
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • Desire and ability to provide care to children and peers in an outdoor environment.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, integrity, selfcontrol, and an ability to adapt well to changing situations.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to succeed in a Sleepaway camp environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior camp and/or outdoors experience

  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while leading programming.

Required

Compensation
- $50 - $60 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications)

  • Room and board while at camp.
  • Time off: Friday evening to Saturday evening each week.
