LOCATION OF POSITION:

This position is with the Maryland Department of General Services, Maryland Capitol Police, with positions located in Baltimore City and Annapolis, Maryland (Anne Arundel County).


Main Purpose of Job:

Under general direction from headquarters, he Lieutenant performs managerial and administrative oversight of sworn and non-sworn employees at the division level.

Supervision is exercised primarily through subordinate supervisors.

  • Duties for this position include but are not limited to:
  • Supervises and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel by reviewing results achieved and ensuring conformance to policies, procedures and directives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new or revised policies, procedures and directives and provide professional assistance with their interpretation for DGS-MCP members.
  • Assists Commander with directing, coordinating and reviewing assignments, special details, unplanned emergencies, and weather events to ensure proper staffing, and proper notification with MCP Command, DGS-FOM, State agencies and allied emergency services.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships which garner respect and promote leadership with members of DGS-MCP, other State employees and visitors to State facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:
High School diploma or G.E.D.

certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.


Experience:
One year of experience supervising certified law enforcement officers.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS:


  • This position requires at least one year of experience at the Sergeant level within DGS-Maryland Capitol Police.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • At least two years of experience as a Certified Law Enforcement Officer in Maryland.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION:

This recruitment is limited to current DGS-Maryland Capitol Police employees only at the Sergeant rank or above.


LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:


  • Applicants for this classification, formerly certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission as a Police Officer within the past three years and are eligible for recertification at the time of appointment, meet the certification requirement for this classification. The recertification criteria are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations , available at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
  • 3. Employees in this classification may be required to possess or obtain a special police commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3209, Annotated Code of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Selection standards for Police Officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3-207, Annotated Code of Maryland.

These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations and include the following:


  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history
  • Oral interview
  • Physical examination
  • Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland. 3. Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
