Description

Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for the receipt and processing of orders for blood products, transportation of products to and from the appropriate location.

Transportation of unprocessed products and sample tubes to the laboratory for processing, receipt of imported blood products, returns, and transfers of inventory from one distribution location to another.

Provides excellent customer service to all customers and ensures proper documentation of all processes.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations. Is responsible for bringing compliance issues to the attention of management.
  • Receives and enters orders for blood products.
  • Completes electronic shipment of blood products.
  • Packages and delivers shipments.
  • Prepares and transports unprocessed blood products and sample tubes for manufacturing.
  • Delivers supplies to donor centers as required.
  • Completes return transactions.
  • Completes transfer of inventory between distribution locations.
  • Receives and processes imported blood products.
  • Retrieves specimen pick-ups as required by the Reference Laboratory.
  • Performs vehicle inspections as instructed and reports any damage, malfunctions, or needed repairs in a timely fashion.
  • Processes outdated or unsuitable products for discard.
  • Completes special collection/procedure billing procedures as assigned.
  • Initiates and completes component retrieval as needed.
  • Ensures that all blood products are stored appropriately, and responds to all storage location alarms, moving product when necessary.
  • Performs inventory audit.
  • Prepares and provides historical antigen negative products as requested.
  • Ensures proper inventory rotation.
  • Ensures complete and accurate documentation of processes as required, compiles and maintains files, and keeps all work areas neat and clean.

Hospital Services Technician Level II Duties in addition to the above duties listed in Hospital Services Technician Level I:

  • Labels blood components.
  • Performs irradiation of blood components.

NATURE AND EXTENT OF SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO THE POSITION:

The supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities and deadlines, assisting the employee with unusual situations with no clear precedents.

Employee plans and executes steps to complete the assignment, following instructions, policies and previous training or accepted practices. Completed work is evaluated for soundness, appropriateness and conformity to policy. Methods used by the employee are not reviewed in detail.

Occasionally, the supervisor sets overall objectives and resources available, with deadlines and work plans developed in consultation with the employee, with some opportunity for the employee to interpret policy, or determine approaches and methodology for accomplishing assignments.

To perform this job successfully, each essential duty (as identified above) must be performed satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


GENERAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:


  • Knowledge of infection control and blood transport procedures.
  • Knowledge of general vehicle maintenance (e.g. check the oil, lights, horn, wipers, etc.).
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures (e.g. proper lifting technique).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (e.g. smiles, communication,).
  • Safe driving skills.
  • Basic math skills (related to tracking unit tallies, etc.)
  • Able to work with blood.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records, and to resolve discrepancies in those records.

For Hospital Services Technician II:
Knowledge of FDA Regulations on component processing, component storage, packaging, and transportation.

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to embrace change in a positive manner.
  • Good computer skills and a basic understanding of computer programs needed for departmental reports.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle multiple tasks.
