    Duties

    Primary duties of the Podiatrist are to provide comprehensive clinical and surgical Podiatry care to our Veteran patients.

    The Podiatrist will provide diagnostic and therapeutic services in inpatient and outpatient settings, order diagnostic studies and procedures, and perform surgical and non-surgical high quality foot and ankle general Podiatry procedures


    Podiatry is the health care profession that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of foot and ankle conditions through medical and surgical means.


    Podiatry Services includes the following:

    • Complete history and physical examination with an emphasis on diagnosis and foot/ankle pathology, and identification of related systemic conditions.
    • Complete medical and surgical management of podiatric pathology
    • May also supervise students and residents who rotate through the podiatry service.
    • Prescription of pharmaceuticals and therapeutic devices, (orthotics, prosthetic devices, plaster casts, immobilization devices, etc.)
    • Appropriate consultation, referral and co-management of patients with complicating systemic conditions, and Health promotion and disease prevention.
    • The position is supervised by the Chief of Surgical Services at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center who establishes objectives and department priorities. Podiatry is a section within the Surgery Service.
    • Leadership assigns patient care management by defining objectives, priorities and deadlines; general guidance is provided but functions and responsibilities are carried out independently. He or she assumes responsibility in work assignments in accordance with regulations and independently and resolves most conflicts by using considerable judgment and interpretation.
    • The podiatrist keeps the supervisor informed of progress and section matters and results are reviewed for completion and conformance with policy. Work is reviewed to ensure that overall objectives of the position are met.

    Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

    Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

    Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

    Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory

    Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)

    Free liability protection with tail coverage provided

    Contract:
    No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

    Work Schedule:
    Monday - Friday, 7:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.; however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/medical center.

    Podiatrist Basic Requirements


    • Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
    • Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.

    Approved residencies are:
    (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~

    • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

    Physical Requirements:
    Work is sedentary but also demands standing, walking, bending, twisting, and carrying light items.

    Education

    Education:

    Applicants must possess a doctor of podiatric medicine degree, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery.

    The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.

    (1) Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine and surgery, approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the American Podiatry Medical Association in the year in which the degree was granted.


    NOTE:

    The Under Secretary of Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C.

    § 7405 for a podiatric graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

    The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.

    c. Licensure or Registration.

    Applicants must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

    The podiatrist must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

    Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment.
