JOB PURPOSE


The job purpose of an Oncology Nurse at the Cancer and Blood Specialty Clinic is to provide comprehensive nursing care and support to patients undergoing cancer and blood disorder treatments.

This role involves assessing patient needs, administering treatments, educating patients and their families, and collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assessing and monitoring patients' physical and emotional wellbeing, including vital signs, symptoms, and treatment side effects
  • Administering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other cancerrelated treatments as prescribed by the physicians
  • Educating patients and their families about their diagnosis, treatment options, and selfcare techniques
  • Providing supportive care, including symptom management, pain control, and emotional support
  • Collaborating with physicians, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized treatment plans
  • Performing procedures such as accessing central lines, administering blood products, and managing intravenous therapies
  • Documenting patient information, treatment plans, and progress in electronic health records accurately and timely
  • Assisting in clinical research studies and collecting data for research purposes
  • Adhering to nursing standards, protocols, and safety measures to ensure patient wellbeing

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Valid California Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) or similar certification is highly desirable
  • Previous experience in oncology nursing or a related field is highly advantageous
  • Excellent phlebotomy or IV skills required
  • Strong knowledge of oncology nursing practices, chemotherapy administration, and symptom management is beneficial
  • Excellent clinical assessment and critical thinking skills to identify and respond to patient needs effectively
  • Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and other healthcare software
  • Effecting communication and interpersonal skills to establish rapport with patients, families, and the healthcare team
  • Compassion, empathy, and the ability to provide emotional support to patients and their families
  • Ability to work effectively in a fastpaced, multidisciplinary team environment
  • Knowledge of nursing ethics, patient confidentiality, and regulatory requirements
  • Current CPR certification
  • Must be flexible and be able to adapt in a changing work environment

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The Oncology Nurse will work in an outpatient clinic setting during regular clinic hours
  • The work environment may involve exposure to chemotherapy drugs and infectious materials, so following safety protocols is essential
  • Collaboration and coordination with other healthcare professionals and multidisciplinary teams are common
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods
  • Manual dexterity and physical strength to perform nursing procedures, including lifting and positioning patients
  • Ability to tolerate long hours on your feet and work in emotionally challenging situations
  • Fine motor skills to handle medical equipment and perform procedures
  • Visual acuity to read charts, documents, and monitor patients' conditions
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

DIRECT REPORTS

  • The Oncology Nurse at the Cancer and Blood Specialty Clinic does not have direct reports. However, they may collaborate with other healthcare professionals and work as part of a team to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Pay:
From $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
