Duties and Responsibilities:

Inter-departmental cross training will be mandatory, metal finishers may be required to do the following:


  • Use corrosive chemicals and acids to age, distress, texturize, and alter metal surfaces to custom specifications for artistic/architectural finishes on various substrates
  • Experience using orbital sanders, Scotch Brite, and steel wool on steel, stainless, bronze, and aluminum substrates for coating surface prep or aesthetic purposes
  • Precisely mask and protect parts with tape as needed
  • Pretreat and clean metal surfaces to prepare for a patina or paint by chemical or mechanical means such as orbital sanding or grinding
  • Paint or powdercoat custom and production parts and assemblies
  • Complete quality control checks on all parts, with attention to surface preparation; conduct adhesion testing and analysis as needed
  • Recognize and troubleshoot coating quality issues before completion, determine solutions for quality failures
  • Pre-Gel primers and chrome coats before top coating in powder
  • Stage and hang material on racks; use trolley system or forklift to move parts in and out of spray booths, ovens, and batch washer; rigging of heavyweight stair or building sections
  • Track and coordinate timelines for inventory required for projects
  • Prepare samples and mockups for jobs in bidding process
  • Perform daily housekeeping tasks and activities, including maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, spray guns, booths, ovens, and washer. Maintain our Nordson Encore manual guns and Nordson iControl automated booth as required
  • Communicate regularly with department manager/supervisor, project managers, and company executives to thoroughly understand requirements of each project
  • Safely perform all duties and job requirements, including wearing all PPE during shift
  • Additional related responsibilities and duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Extensive knowledge of surface preparation methods, adhesion testing, and coating compatibility
  • Ability to read architectural drawings to determine required finish areas
  • Preferred prior use of finishing products from Cerakote, Caswell, Birchwood, and Triple S Chemical.
  • NACE Certified, knowledge of AAMA warranties, or NOMMA guidelines
  • Experience in coating spray booths or powder booths
  • Ability to multitask and maintain keen attention to detail
  • Ability to distinguish colors is required for color tinting or faux finishing
  • Prior experience as a Powder Coat Technician, Industrial Painter, or Patina Artist is a plus
  • Forklift certification is a plus
  • Knowledge of pretreatment systems such as conversion coating, sandblasting, zinc primers, etc. is a plus

Working Conditions


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.

The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.


Physical Requirements


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking and bending. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 50 pound.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Position Type/expected hours of work
This is a full-time position. Work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm and occasional Saturdays as needed.
