    Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Laboratory Technician 2 position.

    This position is located in Manchester Environmental Laboratory (MEL) in Port Orchard, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station. MEL is a production lab that in part is supported by the inorganics unit. The inorganics unit manages a high sample load successfully by technically skilled staff who communicate and collaborate well. The Environmental Assessment Program is the science arm of Ecology. Our scientists measure and analyze environmental conditions. Quality data is our highest priority. We use this data to evaluate and communicate environmental threats and to guide the state's environmental policy decisions.

    This Laboratory Technician 2 position is a part of the Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) whose mission is to measure, assess, and communicate environmental conditions in Washington.

    We work to improve the environment for current and future generations through innovative and excellent science and thriving partnerships.

    In the Laboratory Technician 2 role, you will analyze complex chemical tests on water, wastewater, sediment, tissue and hazardous waste in a production environmental laboratory creating legally binding data.

    You will gain experience in a production laboratory atmosphere, implementing EPA Methods, Standard Methods and following quality assurance protocol. You will have opportunities to build a network and collaborative relationships in this field of work.     Tele-work options for this position: This position must be in the office 5 days per week

    What makes this role unique? This Laboratory Technician 2 is a part of the inorganics unit at MEL, a highly active production lab.

    As a laboratory technician 2 you will follow EPA Methods, Standard Methods and strict QC protocol.

    A lab tech in this unit you must be detailed, organized, collaborative, well communicated, and can work independently and in a team.


    What you will do:

    Perform chemical analysis for solid and water environmental samples including analyses for biochemical demand (BOD), total organic carbon (TOC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total suspended solids (TSS) and oil and grease (OG).

    Provide backup support on analyses primary to lab technicians and chemists as needed, performing chemical analysis on samples for parameters including other solid parameters, pH, and nutrient samples.

    Must be dependable, flexible, and willing to accept responsibility. Well organized and maintain a high degree of accuracy in all work output and communication. Maintain professional relationships that are inclusive, collaborative and respectful. Capable to work independently and in team.


    Required Qualifications:

    Option 1:
    Four years of chemical related laboratory experience.


    Option 2:

    Two years of chemical or related laboratory experience and an Associate's degree in a scientific study which includes courses taken in chemistry.


    Option 3:
    A bachelor's degree or higher in a laboratory science.

    Knowledge of Standard Methods for solids analyses TSS, TDS, TS, AFDW, pH, turbidity. EPA methods analysis followed by MEL. Experience analyzing environmental samples TSS, SSC and BOD. Experience using Promium Element LIMS.
