Description
Job DescriptionSavannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is seeking an Engineer focused on Polymer Additive Manufacturing for the Advanced Engineering Division.
In this position, the candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded project portfolio aligned with SRNL mission enablers of data-driven materials development and developing manufacturing solutions for Environmental Management, the NNSA, and energy security.
This will include leading and partnering on proposal teams as well as managing both technical and programmatic aspects of successfully won projects.
ResponsibilitiesThe engineer will be expected to develop an externally funded project portfolio aligned with SRNL mission enablers of data-driven materials development and developing manufacturing solutions for Environmental Management, the NNSA, and energy security.
This will include leading and partnering on proposal teams as well as managing both technical and programmatic aspects of successfully won projects.
Specifically sought-after skills include using microfluidics or other lab-scale / pilot-scale techniques for polymer synthesis and modification alongside experience designing, synthesizing, and characterizing polymer blends and composites (particularly polymer-metal composites, which may include MOFs, or polymer-ceramic composites like MXenes).
Alternatively, experience with functional application leveraging "Big Data" concepts, computational fluid dynamics, in situ process monitoring, or other related modelling and computational skills toward polymer synthesis and manufacturing is preferred.
Prior experience with additive manufacturing (any/all forms), injection molding, rotational molding, and other forms of polymer manufacturing is preferred.The Engineer is expected to interface and engage with researchers across all three SRNL Research Directorates as well as engage in cross-site collaborations with other DOE facilities in the regular course of their research.
Mentoring postdoctoral researchers and student interns is expected in the course of work.Maintaining a national presence at technical meetings - both internal to DOE and through professional organizations - is expected in the course of work.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
BS + 7-9 yrs; MS + 6-8 yrs; PhD + 5-7 yrsA background and working knowledge in the fundamental concepts and behavior of polymeric materials (e.g., glass transition, polymorphism, time-temperature superposition, viscoelasticity, polymer blends, basic synthetic or reactive pathways common to polymers, etc.) is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, and Mechanical Engineering.
