Class Definition:


GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES


Within the Department of Environmental Management (DEM), to plan, supervise, review and participate in the work of a staff engaged in the operation, adjustment, service and repair of a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment used to support various DEM projects; to perform site assessments of DEM properties and facilities and assist with the development and maintenance of public access improvements; and to do related work as required.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED


Receives long-term and immediate assignments concerning the operation and/or maintenance of vehicles and equipment and related work assignments; work is reviewed by field visits or submitted reports for quality of work performed.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED


Plans, assigns and reviews the work of subordinate staff engaged in the operation, maintenance and repair of heavy motor equipment and vehicles and related Department of Environmental Management projects.


Illustrative Examples of Work Performed:


  • Within the Department of Environmental Management (DEM), to plan, supervise, review and participate in the work of a staff engaged in the operation, adjustment, service and repair of a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment used to support various DEM projects, such as: graders, bulldozers, farm tractors and related implements such as harrows, spreaders, plows and discs, mowers, excavators, skid steers, front end loaders, truck and trailer units, fish stocking tank trucks, snow plow units, etc.
To operate and maintain chainsaws, landscaping implements, welding units, and general construction equipment.

To perform site assessments of DEM properties and facilities, such as boat ramps, boat docks, parks, beaches, campgrounds, bike paths, roadside rest areas, historical sites, dams, water control structures, fishing accesses, and management areas, and assists with the development and maintenance of public access improvements such as informational signs, kiosks, check stations, roads, parking areas, trails, fences, gates, water control structures, fishways, dams, equipment storage facilities and offices;

To conduct habitat management activities which include the use of specialized mechanical equipment for clearing and cutting dense vegetation.

To perform project planning and scheduling and oversight of routine reporting.

To make constant inspections of equipment, noting its condition and performance; as directed, to oversee the replacement of equipment.


To perform site assessments of DEM properties, facilities, and infrastructure; to develop work plans and schedule projects to facilitate proper maintenance and repairs of facilities, public accesses, and infrastructure, as well as to accomplish required projects.

To operate heavy equipment for brush mowing, land clearing, and snow removal operations. To perform and oversee the grading of roads, parking lots and paths.


To provide support to biological programs and hatchery operations, such as assisting with pheasant stocking, fish stocking/ transport, check station operation, and biological data collection.


To assist with operations and maintenance of DEM facilities, equipment, infrastructure, and grounds, as well as public access areas such as boat ramps, boat docking facilities, fishing accesses, fishways, dams, roads, parking areas, and management areas.


  • As required, to operate equipment such as light trucks, compressors, welders, chainsaws, and other light equipment.
To do related work as required


Required Qualifications for Appointment:


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES


A thorough knowledge of the methods, practices and tools used in operating and maintaining heavy construction and maintenance equipment used to support Department of Environmental Management operations including excavators, skid steers, backhoes, truck and trailer, farm tractors and implements, brush mowing equipment, and fish stocking equipment; a thorough knowledge of general construction and site maintenance methods, including farming, brush mowing, grading, and snow plowing; a working knowledge of the methods and means used to repair or replace the surface of parking lots and roads; demonstrated ability to repair or replace entire engines, drive trains, tracks and rollers, brakes, tires, and front ends of heavy equipment; the ability to plan, lay out and supervise the work of subordinates; the ability to grade roads, parking lots and paths, with mínimal supervision; the ability to perform tasks with mechanical aptitude; the ability to understand and follow instructions; the ability to prepare and keep records and to make reports; and related capacities and abilities.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:
Completion of twelve school grades, including or supplemented by courses in mechanics and vehicle repair

Experience:
At least two years in a position requiring the supervision of staff and the operation and maintenanc
