- Develops student services and co-curricular programming to recruit and retain Native Hawaiian Graduate students in all academic disciplines across the Manoa campus and providing administrative support in the day-to-day management of Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS). Collaborates with NHSS, HSHK and UH Manoa staff and faculty, students, and/or student organizations to develop and implement student, faculty and staff programming related to Native Hawaiian graduate access, success and research.
- Develops research on Indigenous methodologies, curriculum and pedagogy on which to base recruitment and retention strategies, and employs this research in collaboration with graduate program chairs and the Director of NHSS, to increase the overall enrollment of Native Hawaiian graduate students.
- Works with faculty, department chairs and deans to improve recruitment of Native Hawaiians into graduate programs across the campus and to develop and implement pipelines such as BA to MA pipelines (BAM) or pathways into the workforce to improve the efficient and successful transition of students from first year to career-ready graduates.
- Develop and maintain data systems that track and record statistical trends relevant to Native Hawaiian graduate students, performing activities such as survey design and implementation, data collection, and submission of reports.
- Develop strategies to engage in or align with University policies that impact or strengthen Native Hawaiian graduate student opportunities. Provides consultation and other related services to students, faculty, staff, communities, and organizations in areas pertaining to educational and institutional research on Native Hawaiian student access and success. Consultation can include resource, capacity building and/or development, training, policy analysis, technical assistance, education, and outreach.
- Conducts evaluations of programs and services and publishes evaluation results in the form of technical, analytical, and interpretive reports to peer reviewed journals for the publication of best practices for student support in Indigenous institutions.
- Assist and provides technical support and consultation for program evaluation efforts required for extramurally as well as university funded projects and other internal formative and summative evaluation and accreditation for both WASC and WINHEC.
- Explores funding opportunities and applies for fellowships, grants and/or awards to support NHSS programs and projects. Provides administrative support to NHSS through funding development, grant management and administrative efforts, such as serving as principal investigator (and other support roles) on extramurally funded projects. Identifies and leads extramural funding development for Native Hawaiian graduate students.
- Identify strategic partnerships with academic and student success units at UHM and UH System. Serves on College or University governance bodies and committees. Manages, coordinates and conducts special assignments, projects, and reports for the College or University and/or represent these groups in collaborations and other roles as requested and appropriate.
- Oversees NHSS Graduate Assistants and other student staff.
- Develops an independent research agenda on Native Hawaiian graduate student success, consistent with the mission of HSHK and NHSS. Leads, develops, manages, and conducts empirical research on Native Hawaiian access and success in higher education, especially as it pertains to Native Hawaiians and other underrepresented student groups.
- Disseminates and publishes research results in the form of professional and conference presentations, academic journals and other professional publications. Contributes best/promising practices to the field of student affairs.
- Supports and participates in HSHK departmental level programmatic planning and strategy/policy development activities relative to Native Hawaiian graduate educational access and success. Represents HSHK, as appropriate, in designated roles at the campus/University level and in the larger community.
- Will develop and implement post-graduate and career focused programs such as internships, fellowships, and outreach initiatives, in collaboration with UH and non-UH partners that support career placement for Hawaiian graduate students.
- Master's Degree from a college or university of recognized standing in the field of Education, or any related disciplines.
- At least one year of work experience in student services, counseling, teaching or a related field;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, students, legislators, sate and federal official and the general public;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Knowledge of Hawaiian education support programs, issues and activities;
- One year working relationship with the Hawaiian community;
- Demonstrated planning, organizational, and management skills;
- Knowledge of Hawaiian culture and language;
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
- PhD from an accredited college or university in the field of Education, or any related disciplines;
- Three years experience in management of program development;
- Experience with presenting research in local and national conferences
- Ability to build rapport and manage collaborative partnerships
- Experience generating extramural funding
- Hawaiian language proficiency
