Essential Job Responsibilities:


  • Assessing inbound and outbound phone calls to determine urgency of seeing the patient based on need of brief assessment. May use protocol book as guide. Confers with physician as needed.
  • Makes call back to family/patient when provider requests or to relay messages.
  • Obtain newborn information and input into EHR chart for provider review.
  • Obtain prior authorization for medications when not covered by insurance and clarify further insurance coverage of medications or for referrals.
  • Manage and monitor open orders and reminder calls.
  • Sends those with highrisk chief complaints such as chest pain, abdominal pain, or severe headaches to ER immediately and/or consult with physician.
  • Sets up appointment for patients who do not need to go to ER but need a same day physician appointment or arranges for an appointment scheduler to make a routine appointment.
  • Performs limited Care Management duties via the telephone.

Education:
RN, LPN, or highly skilled Medical Assistant.


Experience:

Phone triage experience required.


Performance Requirements:


  • Knowledge:_
  • Knowledge of telephonebased clinical assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical practice telephone triage protocols.
  • Knowledge of appropriate home health information for patients to follow until visit with physician, if they do not need an immediate ER visit.
  • Skills:_
  • Skill in using a variety of computer hardware and software programs.
  • Skill in using electronic medical records to check patient history.
  • Skill in using protocol book during evaluation as guide to appropriate decision.
  • Skill in making triage decisions and responding quickly and calmly in emergency situations such as calling 911 and arranging for ambulance.
  • Abilities:_
  • Ability to communicate clearly and calmly with patient.
  • Ability to elicit information needed to make brief evaluation.
  • Ability to work closely with physicians and other clinicians as needed.
  • Ability to type accurately and swiftly.
