ABOUT THIS POSITION:


The Planning & Development Department guides the city's physical development by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring the safe construction of buildings and infrastructure.

A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents and elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs to arise.

The process is governed by the development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances.

The Planning & Development Department currently has a vacancy for a Building Code Examiner in the Inspections Division.

The Building Code Examiner position reviews construction plans and inspects construction for compliance with building codes on commercial and residential projects.

It also investigates complaints of nonpermitted construction, grading work, and imminent hazards on residential and commercial properties. Inspectors may also participate in interdepartmental investigations in special circumstances.

Investigations include continuing inspections on compliance activities, issuing formal notices of violations or citations, and may consist of court appearances as a witness for the State.


Job Duties:

  • Performs field plan reviews, job meetings, and inspections on permitted and nonpermitted jobs.
  • Investigate nonpermitted construction complaints/ reports on both residential and commercial projects.
  • Investigates and inspects complaints of reported imminent hazards in residential and commercial projects.
  • Assists customers through the plan submittal, review, and inspection process.
  • Participate in interdepartmental investigations in special circumstances.
  • Continuing inspections on compliance activities. Issue formal notices of violations or citations for validated, nonpermitted construction.
  • Makes appearances in court as a witness for the State/ City.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:


  • Knowledge of ICC (International Code Council) construction codes.
  • Knowledge of International Building code (IBC), International Residential construction code (IRC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), and International Mechanical code (IMC).
  • Ability to read and interpret Construction Plans.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other City employees/ departments and the general public.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

SALARY:


Pay Range:
$33.41 to $49.36 per hour.

Hiring Range:
$33.41 to $42.64 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Two years of experience reviewing plans, schedules, and other data to ensure proposed construction conforms to building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes, zoning ordinance, and related regulations.
  • Two years at the level of Construction Permit Specialist II.

By the end of probation or within the first 12 months of lateral transfer, must obtain the following certifications:

  • ICC Building Plans Examiner OR ICC Commercial Building Inspector

AND Obtain ONE of the following certifications:

  • ICC Electrical Plans Examiner OR IAEI Electrical Inspector, Plan Review
  • ICC Mechanical Plans Examiner OR IAPMO Mechanical Plans Examiner
  • IAPMO Plumbing Plans Examiner OR ICC Plumbing Plans Examiner
  • ICC Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner
  • ICC Electrical Inspector OR IAEI Electrical Inspector, General
  • ICC Mechanical Inspector OR IAPMO Mechanical Inspector
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
