Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western is accepting applications for a full-time Financial Aid Specialist (Educational Support Specialist II). Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of Financial, Veterans' Affairs and Records. Performs a variety of financial aid processing including: ISIR import, communications, packaging, adjusting and cancelling aid, disbursing all aid types. Performs monthly reconciliation of aid programs. Reviews reports to determine changes in student aid eligibility and transfer monitoring. Processes and maintains scholarships. Verifies and monitors continuing student eligibility. Performs Return to Title IV for withdrawn students. Provides student support and a variety of compliance tasks. Serves as a back-up to the Financial Aid Verification Specialist.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required QualificationsExperience interpreting, applying, and explaining administrative policies and procedures. Ability to establish policies and/or make policy recommendations. Thorough familiarity with, and acceptance of, financial aid principles and practices, applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines including the most recent rules issued by Department of Education, Federal Direct Student Loan Program, and loan processing gained through relevant work experience. Experience processing financial aid including: FAFSA load, aid packaging, aid adjusting, aid disbursing, aid reconciling, and aid cancelling. Experience determining student eligibility for federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs. Excellent skills in the use of computers, financial aid software, document imaging, and student databases. Strong analytical skills. Computational skills, including word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Excellent problem-solving abilities.
Experience working with the general public providing exceptional customer service, particularly serving low-income and/or special needs clients while conveying complex information. Excellent written and oral communication skills, and knowledge of basic office procedures.
Additional Considerations
National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) credentials.
Experience with PeopleSoft Student Information System.
Knowledge of Virginia Community College System policies and practices related to student financial aid.
Experience with verification and resolution of conflicting information.
