    Default job background
    Description

    THE SALVATION ARMY

    NCI DIVISION

    DEKALB CORPS

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    POSITION TITLE: Corp Administrator

    LOCATION/DEPT: DeKalb Corps

    REPORTS TO: Divisional Commander

    FLSA CATEGORY: Exempt

    STATUS TYPE: RFT

The primary role of the Corps Administrator is that of "an evangelist", in order to avoid role conflict, he must keep all his practitioner roles within the united perspective of his master role as evangelist, and not allow any one reference group to define his total role.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Evangelist - The essential element of this role is the proclamation of Jesus Christ as redeemer. The goal is the regeneration, not merely the reformation, of men and women. The consequence is membership in Christ's body, not necessarily The Salvation Army. Part of the Corps Administrator's responsibility as an evangelist is to seek to develop and use soldiery's evangelical skills. The mission of the Corps Community Center depends upon this.
    2. Shepherd - The Corps Administrator is responsible for the care of souls within his Corps Community Center constituency, sometimes of those outside, and often of members of his employed staff, advisory board, and community contacts. His work will include the range of pastoral functions and responsibilities including home visitation, spiritual counseling, the aftercare of converts, hospital visitation, ministry to the bereaved, marriage counseling and performance of religious ceremonies. He will assign to mature soldiers specific responsibilities for the guidance and nurture of converts.
    3. Preacher - The purpose of his preaching is to bring the gospel to the nonbeliever and to edify the believer. He will be expected to devote sufficient time each week to study and sermon preparation to ensure that the preaching is the Word of God and not his own, and for the particular needs of the people.
    4. Recruiter - He will be a recruiter primarily for the Army of Jesus Christ and secondarily for The Salvation Army. In some instances, he will be able to direct a new covert back to his former church or a church to which he is better suited. He will make recruit prospects aware of the demands placed upon the soldier of Jesus Christ and enrollment will take place only after the prospect has seriously accepted the demands. He is responsible for making certain that every soldier performs a specific service within the total mission of the Corps, delegating proper authority to those who are commissioned under him as "local Officers".
    5. Trainer and Leader of a Fighting Force - As trainer he is to prepare his soldiery for the militant mission to which they are called. This role as the leader of the fighting force is to determine where spiritual battles need to be waged and to see that they are initiated and carried through. He will teach stewardship, not as an option, but as a requirement for anyone who desires to fight as a Christian soldier.
    6. Group Leader and Coordinator - Groups in the Corps which will afford his soldiers opportunity to participate in a direct way in the evangelical work of the Corps include band, songsters, Corps cadets, junior soldiers, etc. Outreach and opportunity for the larger community include home league, men's club, girl guards, sunbeams, Salvation Army Adventure Corps, young peoples' legion, junior legion, etc.
    7. Social Worker - Extent of his involvement in social casework will depend upon whether his Corps has funds for employment of a social worker. If he does not have a caseworker his role in relation to social service clientele will be that of administrator and he probably will deal directly with only exceptional cases. If he does not have a caseworker, he will function as a caseworker on a part time or full-time basis. He will adhere to and require of others performance consistent with basic principles of good social work practice and keep abreast of development in the social work fields. He will know the limits of his own social work program and budget and when to make referrals to appropriate agencies. His relationship with other social workers and agencies shall always be on the highest professional level.
    8. Business Administrator: Steward Funds, Property and Time - A major responsibility will be adequately financing the work in his command to ensure funds commensurate to community needs, maintenance of properties and replacement of equipment. If adequate funds are not available, he will seek to increase the funds and/or reduce services and expenditure to match resources. Management of time is essential to effective management and effective utilization of this resource among staff and program participants. Schedules must allow flexibility for emergency and unexpected duties which require temporary adjustments, but they will be far less disconcerting when a balanced schedule has been developed and adhered to.
    9. Voice of Christianity to the Community at large - He will always be aware of the tendency of the public to identify his personal views with those of the Army. He cannot speak as a private individual on an issue with those of Army. He cannot speak as a private individual on a public issue without it affecting the attitude of some people toward himself as a Salvation Army representative. Sensitive issued shall be referred to Divisional administration before public statements are issued.
    10. Community Leader - Degree of involvement in community leadership will vary from one community to the other. Fulfilling this role, the Corps Administrator will recognize that in most instances he is the chief representative of the Army in the community. In representing the Army, he will assure that any position he takes has as its ultimate goal the betterment of mankind spiritually, socially and materially. He will acquaint himself with the community and its needs and especially the extent of community resources to deal with those needs.
    11. Coworker with other Salvation Army Departments and Units - The Corps Administrator's role in relation to the greater Salvation Army is both a representative and supportive role - representative in that he represents the greater Army to his corps Community Center at the community at large - and supportive in that his work, although suited particularly to local needs, is effected with the intention of helping build and international movement which is a more effective instrument of God's will.
    12. Public Relations - The Corps Administrator will keep regularly informed of Army activities, programs, achievements, financial affairs, needs and programs. He will provide guidance in establishing goals and making projections for Army work in the community, never hesitating to seek the benefit of advice and counsel of community leaders within the framework of their local community concerns.
    13. Role of the Corps Administrator's Wife - The wife of the Corps Administrator shares not only her husband's rank and status but also in his professional responsibilities. Usually, she will oversee the programs relating to women and girls and function in community leadership consistent with her background and skills. She must be careful to maintain a proper balance between family and professional responsibilities. She will participate to some degree in all or most aspects of the Corps Community Center Program, including the preaching and shepherding ministry and will strive always to be a vital voice in the evangelistic program of the Corps.

The foregoing Brief of Employment of the Corps Administrator adapted for this position from the text of booklet "The Role of the Corps Officer". The purpose of the excerpted test is to meet the requirement of determination that the position of Corps Administrator qualifies under the regulations of the U.S. Department of Labor as an exempt employee position. This does not supersede the complete test of the annual, however, in the actual performance of his/her total assignment
