GENERAL PROTECTIVE SERVICES UNIT:

This is professional social services work.

Employees in this class provide case management services to children, youth and families to ensure the health and safety of each child in the family and to assist the family in attaining a more satisfactory social, economic, emotional or physical adjustment.

Employees perform a variety of social services and case management duties designed to provide supportive services to children, youth and families including:

  • Assessing presenting problems, strengths and needs of families.
  • Assisting families in developing and using their own potential for more adequately resolving their social, health, emotional and economic problems.
  • Providing social services, such as home and budget management, housing, child care and parenting skills, employment, and when necessary placement of children in foster or adoptive homes, residential facilities or institutions.
  • Scheduling and conducting interviews and followup visits to provide service and counseling.
  • Preparing social studies, case summaries, reports, and correspondence.
Preparing documents and providing testimony in court under supervision.
Making referrals to other public and private social service organizations and community
- agencies and resources to meet the child's needs and assisting children, youth and their families in understanding and utilizing these resources.

  • Developing a specific written service plan for each family member with input from the family whenever possible.
  • Linking the family to services to meet service plan requirements through the process of prompt authorization and referral.


Employees attend and participate in case reviews and supervisory conferences and are exposed to a variety of learning experiences, including on-the-job training programs, designed to develop professional and technical skills.


Employees participate in formal and informal county agency and state training programs which provide basic knowledge relative to agency purpose, services provided, client population characteristic, and applicable laws, methods, procedures, rules and regulations governing the operation of the agency necessary to perform social service and case management supportive services to children, youth and families.


Work is performed under the supervision of a professional social service or administrative supervisor and is reviewed through individual and group conferences, assignment of professional reading, attendance at training programs, and the reading of records and reports.


Employees learn about the network of available community resources by reviewing resource files, making site visits, and working with casework staff.

Employees receive instruction regarding the reason for and proper completion of applicable forms and paperwork.

Employees document activities and services using designated agency methods and procedures, including social service summaries, correspondence and reports.

Employees are assigned after-hours on-call on a rotating basis.

Employees perform related work as required.

Any other duties as assigned by the employee's immediate supervisor, Director and/or his/her designee.
