Minimum Qualifications
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).


Duties Description
Under the direction of the Transportation Office Assistant 2 (TOA2), the Office Assistant 1 (Keyboarding) will assume the following responsibilities:

  • prepare and process confidential reports utilizing Microsoft Word,
- gather information and create reports in Excel,
- provide clerical support to all office staff and highway maintenance supervisors,
- maintain electronic and paper filing system,
- assist in Statewide Financial System activities including the creation of receipts and purchase orders,
- assist in the processing of timesheets utilizing LATS and MMS software, TRINFO, and HRIS,
- process training and certification requests,
- process personnel-related forms including hiring, probation, performance evaluation, health insurance and other forms as needed,
- open and process postal mail daily,
- answer and process phone calls from the public and department personnel,
- attend professional development offerings and trainings as recommended,
- perform other duties typically assigned to an Office Assistant 1 as needed,
- assume the role, if necessary, within the Incident Command System (ICS) to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations, which may occur outside of normal shift hours of Monday
  • Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.


Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.


Additional Comments


At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination.

Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.

While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
