    Job Summary:

    The Senior Database Administrator is responsible for maintaining SQL Servers (both virtual machine-based and cloud-based) and databases, ensuring database availability and uptime for both high availability and disaster recovery, leading migration efforts related to moving IaaS-based workloads and systems into PaaS/SaaS equivalents, helping products development teams with source control and both manual and automated deployments for SQL code, and maintaining uptime for the environments. This position is a service-oriented role and requires a high sense of ownership of problems, with a focus on managing and resolving issues in alignment with SOPs, security, and uptime requirements, as well as maintaining communication with multiple teams to keep them updated regarding the status of any open tasks or items, escalations, and any solutions proposed/implemented. The position will also expose individuals to the complete Software Development Life Cycle.

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities

    Specific duties and responsibilities include:

    • Maintain, monitor, and manage the SQL Server databases in all environments
    • Troubleshoot performance and availability issues related to Windows Server, SQL Server on Virtual Machines, Azure SQL Server Managed Instances, Always On Readable Secondaries, Always On Availability Groups, SQL Service Broker, and SQL replication
    • Continuously monitor and baseline SQL Server databases, performance, security, and changes
    • Proactively and reactively resolve database performance and capacity issues, including managing indexes, statistics, SQL trace data, audits, and alerting
    • Manage SQL Server jobs and Windows scheduled tasks, including synchronizing across multiple instances
    • Manage and monitor SQL Database Mail end-to-end
    • Perform cumulative updates, migrate and upgrade SQL Server versions as needed for IaaS (Virtual Machine) deployments
    • Lead efforts to migrate IaaS (Virtual Machine) workloads built on/in SQL Server to PaaS/SaaS
    • Automate routine tasks, alert response using Powershell, SQL, .NET, or other tools (e.g., dbatools)
    • Analyze query execution plans and advise developers on best practices for database code
    • Collaborate with development, QA, and business teams, and at times, directly with customers
    • Manage data access and security of SQL Server databases and critical data
    • Support team members for requests with Azure Data Factory, Integration Services (SSIS), and other data import/export tools
    • Proactively analyze and bring forth ideas for continuous improvement, including researching and developing new ways to improve existing functionality and increase uptime and performance
    • Assist other Technical Operations team members in maintaining application and website uptime, including managing Windows Server, DNS, patching systems, etc. when needed
    • Provide 24/7 support for critical Production systems
    • Perform scheduled maintenance and support release deployment activities after hours

    Requirements

    Education and Training

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field from an accredited university and/or equivalent work experience

    Knowledge and Skills

    • 5+ years of experience in Microsoft SQL Server Database Administration on SQL Server 2016+
    • 2+ years of experience managing Microsoft SQL Server 2019+ with extensive knowledge of new features
    • 2+ years of experience managing systems in Microsoft Azure cloud platform
    • Extensive knowledge of T-SQL, writing complex queries, stored procedures, and functions
    • Strong knowledge of SQL Server Always On, security model, and managing SQL jobs in an enterprise
    • Strong knowledge and experience in troubleshooting SQL availability, blocking and locking issues, index design, monitoring logs for critical events, SQL Profiler and SQL Trace, SQL backup and restore, SQL Agent
    • Strong knowledge of SQL replication, clustering, storage as relates to SQL Server
    • Solid knowledge and experience with database design, performance tuning, query optimization, indexes, data migration tools, data analysis, stored procedure programming, linked servers, SQL Server setup and installation, disaster recovery concepts (RPO, RTO)
    • Solid understanding of database modeling concepts such as normalization, ACID
    • Working knowledge of Azure SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance. Direct experience a plus
    • Capability to lead projects, as well as be able to work in a team environment
