    Job Description Summary


    The Data Scientist will work in the Center for AI and Data Science for Integrated Diagnostics (AI2D) to query, organize, and analyze multi-institutional clinical and biological data to help develop and evaluate approaches and tools for learning healthcare systems.

    The Data Scientist will collaboratively study clinical practices and implement policies and interventions related to disease screening, population health, and decision science.

    The Data Scientist will also contribute to the development of novel computational and informatics methods and tools, including for training prediction models that are interpretable, transferable across clinical practices, and equitable.

    This individual will work closely with faculty and staff of the Departments of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics.

    Job Responsibilities


    The University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Data Scientist to join the Center for AI and Data Science for Integrated Diagnostics (AI2D).

    The Data Scientist (Senior Data Analyst) will be responsible for querying, organizing, and analyzing multi-institutional clinical and biological data to help develop and evaluate approaches and tools for learning healthcare systems.

    They will collaboratively study clinical practices and implement policies and interventions related to disease screening, population health, and decision science.

    The Data Scientist will also contribute to the development of novel computational and informatics methods and tools, including for training prediction models that are interpretable, transferable across clinical practices, and equitable.

    This individual will work closely with faculty and staff of the Departments of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics.

    At its core, this position is about revolutionizing healthcare with data-driven practices to predict and ultimately prevent serious illness.

    Qualifications


    • Bachelor of Science and 4 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
    • Either M.S. degree in relevant technical field, e.g. Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or equivalent with 2 years of relevant work experience or PhD in relevant technical field preferred
    • Fluency with conventional statistical and machine learning techniques such as logistic regression, decision trees, deep neural networks, clustering, and dimension reduction required
    • Experience manipulating and analyzing complex, large volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources required
    • Fluency in coding in R and/or Python required
    • Familiarity with reproducible scientific workflows (e.g. Jupyter notebooks or Rmarkdown) and version control (e.g. git) required
    • Familiarity with Linux OS operating systems required
    • A strong passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data required
    • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment required
    • A flexible analytic approach that allows for results at varying levels of precision required
    • Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, and actionable manner required
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills required
    • Experience with clinical or biomedical research preferred
    • Experience with querying large databases preferred
    • Experience with MLops preferred
    • Ability to work with a software development team using formal software development methods preferred
    • Experience as first author of scientific publications a plus
    • Experience with high-performance or cloud computing a plus

    Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
