Position Objective:

Responsible for providing support and assistance to patients and their significant others throughout the Medical Center.

Such assistance includes, but is not limited to:

facilitating complaint resolution, assisting with complex decision making and providing education to patients, families and staff on Advance Directives and patient rights issues.


Essential Job Duties:

  • Assesses the level of anxiety and understanding in patients, families and staff, intervenes to facilitate the reduction of stressors or problem issues, using multiple sources of information and assessment skills.
  • Plans realistic individualized patient and family goals in terms of times, measurable and behavioral, outcomes, in collaboration with other health care disciplines.
  • Assists patients/family with complex decisionmaking with treatment plans, life support issues, organ donation, advance directives and other related issues.
  • Provides education to staff, patients and the community on a regular basis regarding issues of patient rights and other patient relations issues.
  • Documents appropriately in the medical record when interventions and recommendations are made.
  • Acts as a resource/liaison between the Medical Center and community groups and agencies.
  • Makes rounds each day to all Main Campus inpatient units and the Emergency Department to collaborate with Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse, Patient advocates and others regarding patient and family issues and needs.
  • Communicates status of patient issues on a regular basis to the Manager of Patient Advocacy Services and serves as a resource in the absence of this position.
  • Coordinates issues regarding patient rights and Advance Directive, including on going monitoring of compliance.
  • Maintain Concerns and Grievances within the regulatory response and follow up guidelines

Educational/Experience Requirements:


  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Clinical degree preferred
  • Three years progressive experience in an inpatient clinical care setting.

Physical Demands - Medium

Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.**
