Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, we are seeking a
_Research Specialist_ who will focus on performing both routine assays and experimental techniques in the study of hepatitis B virus and the immune system.

The Research Specialist will be responsible for independently managing multiple ongoing research projects simultaneously, analyzing data, generating figures to summarize the data, and presenting the data to a faculty investigator clearly and concisely in a timely manner.

Given clear directives the Research Specialist is expected to have the ability to forward research endeavors quickly and efficiently with little supervision.

Responsibilities include contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow established procedures and utilize an aseptic technique to perform experiments associated with virology and immunology of HBV.
  • Perform HBV sequencing using Sanger or nanopore technologies.
  • Perform sequencing analysis.
  • Perform various biological assays to explore mechanisms influencing viral outcome and infectivity: nucleic acid extractions and purifications, gel electrophoresis, realtime PCR, ELISA, cell culture and transfection, molecular cloning, western blotting, sequencing, droplet digital PCR, LCM (laser capture microdissection), etc.
  • Rigorous documentation of experimental planning, experimental methods, and experimental results updated on a daily basis.
  • Responsible for the operation of lab computers for data entry. Maintain accurate data records and laboratory notebook.
  • Organize and present data to the faculty investigator.
  • Along with the faculty investigator or senior lab staff, develop and institute protocols for routine laboratory analyses.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, plate washer, and/or utilize biological safety cabinet
  • Utilize sophisticated instrumentation such as a flow cytometer, spectrophotometer, luminometer, thermal cycler, light cycler, droplet generator, LCM, etc.
  • Maintain and make necessary adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, and alignment.
  • Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels, order materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, count orders upon receipt.
  • Additional responsibilities related to the daily laboratory operations will be assigned as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field.
  • Oneyear laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic techniques in virology, immunology, and molecular biology.
  • Basic Microsoft Office experience helpful.
  • Multiple experiences in molecular (LCM, nucleic acid extraction/purification, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, ddPCR, sequencing, etc.), immunological, cell culture and mouse handling techniques is a plus.
