    ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY:
    The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation.

    DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails.

    Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R.

    Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty.

    In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION:


    Implements a nutrition program by conducting assigned surveys or studies and providing individual or group counsel or instruction on the subject of nutrition and its effect on health to a particular segment of the County population or other designated groups.

    Essential Job Functions


    • Participates in the development of nutrition programs by identifying the nutrition needs of individuals at risk or a population segment, defining the problems which may be prevented or corrected with proper nutrition or with Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT).
    • Interviews patients to obtain diet histories, calculates and analyzes the nutrient levels of each patient's diet and counsels on normal nutrition and diet modification, adapting the discussion to the specific dietary problems assessed as well as to the socioeconomic, emotional need, personal preference, and cultural background of the patient.
    • Develops new or adapts existing instructional methods and materials such as visual aids or hand-outs for use in lecturing, patient counseling, group educational sessions and community distribution by nutrition staff and health team members.
    • Plans, organizes, and conducts individual or group instruction sessions on food and medical nutrition therapy utilizing food models and other visual aids to facilitate patient understanding of how to best nourish their bodies.
    • Compiles statistical data and prepares reports on such matters as food market surveys, census reports, mortality reports, nutrition studies, and periodic activity reports for the purpose of identifying problem areas and trends, summarizing activities, and evaluating program effectiveness.
    • Lectures in workshops and participates in panel discussions and special meetings diet or medical nutrition therapy, diet counseling, and on the technical and practical aspects of food and nutrition and its effect on health.
    • Acts as resource person to health center staff, community organizations, prenatal and lactating mothers, senior citizens, nutrition students, and dietetic trainees during their field placement in health centers or while touring a facility, answering technical questions on the practical application of food and nutrition principles in a specialized program; participates in community outreach activities.
    • Schedules and tracks individual patient counseling regarding dietary recommendations.
    • Diabetic teaching including insulin teaching individually or in groups.
    • Coordinates and facilitates nutrition classes.
    • Provides approved educational materials.
    • Administers pre and post tests to evaluate the effectiveness of curriculum and materials.
    • Administers evaluations to collect feedback from class participants.
    • Documents individual patient sessions, goals, progress, and follow-up plans.
    • Compiles prenatal class pre-/post-tests to assess change in patient knowledge and self-efficacy.
    • Interprets evaluation results to assess effectiveness and recommend methods for improvement.
    • Ensures all aspects of cure/education are culturally competent and literacy appropriate.
    Requirements


    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:


    Registration* as a registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration ANDcertification* as a Certified Diabetes Instructor by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE).


    LICENSE:


    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Registration* as a registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

    Certification* as a Certified Diabetes Instructor by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE)*.

    All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted or your application will not be accepted.


    Physical Class II - Light:


    Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting.

    Considerable walking may be involved.

    Examination Content:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and desirable qualifications based on application information, weighted at 100%.


    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    Veteran's Credit:

    Angeles County Child Support Compliance Program:
