JOB SUMMARY:
This is a temporary/seasonal position with responsibility for maintaining the gardens/landscape of a 67-acre historic estate.
Previous gardening/horticulture knowledge, knowledge of common landscape plants (including natives) and sustainable gardening practices, and fine-maintenance skills such as hand-pruning are required.
In addition, disease/pest id and management (IPM) knowledge are a plus. An interest in the preservation and restoration of historic gardens is preferred.
This is an opportunity to be part of a growing horticultural practice at a National Historic Landmark in a beautiful Hudson River setting.
The gardener will work under direction of the Curator of Historic Landscapes to perform outdoor, seasonal, fine-maintenance tasks in support of land stewardship, preservation, restoration, and visitor experiences.
The estate gardens include a rose garden, herb garden, rockeries, fernery, mixed shrub borders, ornamental flowering trees, and container gardens.
Duties:
Planting, transplanting, hand-pruning, weeding, deadheading, soil amendment, mulching, container garden maintenance, id/management of invasives, and trouble-shooting landscaping issues. Help procuring plants and supplies needed for garden projects and installations, including nursery runs. The incumbent will also have an opportunity for design input and seasonal container design.
Qualifications:
- Professional training, gardening or horticulture certification, or 2+ yrs prior experience working (outdoors) in the field of gardening/horticulture.
- Reliable, hard worker with positive attitude.
- Ability to work both collaboratively (team player) and solo, including in inclement weather.
- Available for occasional weekend work if needed.
- English language fluency.
- Possess a valid Driver's License.
- Able to meet the demanding physical requirements of the job, including ability to move equipment/materials to various locations within the landscape that may not be accessible via motor vehicle and to climb ladders. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40lbs and work outside in varying weather (heat, cold, rain). Must be comfortable working with gardening hand tools.
- Local resident familiar with the area and its history and common plants preferred.
