- Arrange for a presenter for monthly Ortho PA meeting (not a BWH Ortho PA)
- Arrange an event or group outing for the Ortho PAs
- Publish in a journal, magazine, etc.
- Initiate and/or maintain a quality improvement or leadership project (ie conference emails, opioid education, patient education materials; Must be approved by Ortho PA leadership)
- Organize an Ortho PA STRATUS training session
- Organize and teach a patient education class (ie spine class)
- Regularly attend and be an active participant in a BWH/FH committee
- Serve as Ortho PA representative at a MGB/BWH PA career fair (minimum 1 hour)
- Serve as PA representative at a local high school career fair
- Participate in community outreach as representative of orthopedic department.
- Other form of leadership (must be approved by Ortho PA leadership)
- Serve as an onboarding mentor for a new PA in department of Orthopedic Surgery
- Precept a PA student for 4 days (days may be spread between multiple students)
- Host 2 prospective shadowers/students (half day each)
- Lecture to PA students at any accredited PA school
- Attend Ortho STRATUS training session
- Attend 8 weekly division/specialty conferences in the department
- Attend 4 PA Grand Rounds (BWH or FH)

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider.
The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.
Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting
Performs complete histories and physical examinations
Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures
Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries
Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population
Performs other duties as assigned

ADDENDUM (BWH Orthopedic Surgery):
The Physician Assistant in the BWH Department of Orthopedic Surgery will work with several orthopedic surgeons as well as various fellows and residents in the Foot and Ankle Division.
While the PA can expect a relatively predictable work schedule planned in advance whenever possible, scheduling variations may occur in order to cover clinical needs as they become apparent to the department/division/clinic.
Additionally, the PA may cover various ambulatory clinic sites, surgicenters, and hospitals which may change over time based on need.
The PA will perform in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies including but not limited to the BWH PA Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, approved clinical privileges, and BWH PA policy.
The PA in orthopedic surgery must have the ability to work in a high stress clinical environment and must be able to take direction well.
Work will require exposure to radiation, needles and other sharps, and possibly surgical cement. Prolonged standing and fast paced environment can be expected. Will require travel to multiple work sites.
Massachusetts Controlled Substance Certificate, DEA licensure, and NCCPA certification required.
Must complete 100 hours of CME every 2 years according to national and state regulations.
BLS and ACLS certification are required upon hire/at initial appointment. Thereafter the PA must maintain BLS certification, but ACLS certification is optional.
PA II
Must have at least 4 years of PA experience and 1 year of orthopedic experience
Must precept at least 1 student for 1 day per year.
The
PA II must demonstrate leadership through hospital and community activities, PA education, professionalism, continued medical education, and advanced clinical skill and competencies.
Must demonstrate 3 areas of leadership per year:
PA II must demonstrate commitment to onboarding and training new PAs in the department.
The
PA II must also demonstrate advancement of their own education/professional growth and/or that of fellow PAs and PA students.
