HJF is seeking a highly motivated and skilled
Bioinformatics Research Associate II to develop and implement software solutions for large-scale biological data analysis, particularly for genomics and multi-omic datasets.

Blends software development expertise and bioinformatics knowledge. Works in a collaborative environment with scientists and engineers to accomplish bioinformatics research goals using cloud technologies.


This position will be in support of the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program and the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine located in Bethesda, MD.

The John P. Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed Bethesda is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer
- trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine.

We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike.

Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners.

HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


Responsibilities:


  • Collaborate with scientists and other bioinformaticians to understand research needs and translate them into software requirements and formulation of software solutions.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain bioinformatics software pipelines using tools and services for public cloud technologies.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a secure and reliable bioinformatics cloud infrastructure.
  • Automate bioinformatics workflows for efficient and scalable data analysis.
  • Cooperates with other groups in finding statistical and bioinformatics solutions to problems that may improve their research flow.
  • Document software design, development, and deployment processes.
  • Stay uptodate with the latest advancements in bioinformatics tools and technologies.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in Bioinformatics or related field required.
  • Minimum of 35 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in software development, preferably with a focus on scientific computing or bioinformatics.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and R.
  • Proficient in working with Linux/Unix operating systems, and experience with containerization technologies like Docker.
  • Experience with bioinformatics workflow tools (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake, Cromwell/WDL).
  • Willingness to learn cloud computing concepts and tools for public cloud platforms, preferably with experience on either Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure.
  • Must acquire domain specific knowledge and understand the technical aspects of research projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong problemsolving and analytical skills.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a office setting.

Security Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship Required and ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret Clearance.
