General Summary of Position
MedStar Health is actively recruiting for a Litigation Specialist to join our Legal team.

While this position does have significant remote flexibility, they must be local to the Maryland / DC area for regular on-site responsibilities.


Performs a variety of duties including; investigations, negotiations, and strategic decisions in a confidential nature to support the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and Legal Department.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts internal investigations; coordinates and conducts litigation with MedStar attorneys and outside counsel, including handling service of complaints, managing paper and electronic discovery data collection, coordinates and conducts witness interviews; coordinates with outside counsel regarding depositions, court deadlines and trial calendars. Works with counsel on litigation strategy and plans, and communicates with clients on implementing of litigation plan.
  • Coordinates independently with state and federal agencies to ensure adequate response to government investigations and legal proceedings, including physician disciplinary actions, commercial litigation, employment actions, wage garnishments, bankruptcy and foreclosure notices, unemployment appeals, etc.
  • Coordinates with Compliance, Risk Management, IT, and other key departments on subpoenas, records retention and management.
  • Handles independently the MedStar Health response to subpoenas and other third party requests for corporate/patient information. Ensures responsibility for adequate safeguards and protections for corporate and patient information in order to comply with relevant privacy and security rules under HIPAA and other relevant laws and regulations.
  • Holds primary responsibility for drafting, communicating, and maintaining litigation hold notices and document production requests related to litigation and other investigative activity. Works independently to identify and collect data and documents from System custodians of records to assure compliance with litigation responsibilities.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports for use by stakeholders in managing company risk.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience in litigation, employment law, ediscovery data and document management/production required
  • Master's degree or Jurisprudence doctorate preferred

Experience

  • 57 years Corporate legal experience, including litigation, employment law, ediscovery data and document management/production required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent professional skills and advanced knowledge of corporate and/or health care legal work.
  • Strong project management, computer, drafting, proofreading, research and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Ability to work professionally and independently on assigned tasks and to complete assignments in a timely manner with great attention to detail.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with corporate boards, state and federal agency personnel, and all levels of staff.
