The Transit Driver Instructor is responsible for instructing new drivers during in-service trainee driving while operating during normal route service by providing instruction, feedback, written evaluation, etc.
What you need to know:
Salary:
$19.50/hr
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years' work experience, including a minimum of 6 months or more of either commercial driving experience, logistics/transportation, training of complex processes or equivalent relevant experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid vehicle operator's license and good driving record.
- Must be able to obtain State of Texas class "B" vehicle operator's license (commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 60 days of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrate the ability to operate several types of buses and vans to the extent of maneuvering safely through congested traffic conditions, adverse weather and road conditions.
- Exhibit a high degree of mental concentration and independent judgement.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with computers.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous commercial driving experience, customer service experience, training experience and mechanical experience.
- Commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement.
Responsibilities:

Instructing:
- Instructs new drivers during inservice trainee driving by verbalizing and demonstrating proper vehicle operation and driving techniques to ensure a quality ride for passengers, explaining routespecific information, service delivery according to the published schedule and answering questions. Responsible for a written evaluation and providing feedback to the drivers after each training shift. Makes recommendations to supervisor and management regarding the trainee's ability to move forward in the training process or if retraining in necessary. Provides follow up or retraining of drivers as necessary.
Driving:
- Drives Texas A&M University transit routes as scheduled; operate assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner and in adherence to all University, departmental and unit policies as well as local, state and federal laws. Provides customer service by assisting with questions on policies, routes, checking ID's, accurately documenting passenger counts, para service, etc.
Administrative:
- Conducts a proper pre and post trip vehicle inspection and note any discrepancies at the beginning and end of every shift; report any potentially hazardous vehicle maintenance or safety issues immediately to a Transit Supervisor or dispatch. Responsible for cleanliness of all equipment assigned during shift.
