Description

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for cleaning and decontaminating medical equipment and supplies; preparing sterile procedure trays and equipment; operating Steam and Sterrad sterilizers; maintaining sterile/clean storage area; answering phone and service door; delivering requested items; completing all required documentation on activities; maintaining the standards of the Guest Relations Policy; and assisting in other areas as requested.

Participate in the training and in-service programs for staff. Assumes responsibility and accountability at all times for quality performance.

Qualifications

  • One year of central sterile processing experience preferred.
  • High School graduate, or equivalent preferred
  • Completed an accredited Central Service Technician Training course.

Responsibilities

  • The CSP phone and service door are answered promptly.
  • Deliver instrument sets or supply items applicable to CSP to the appropriate department.
  • CSP provided items are delivered accurately. "Stat" orders are handled immediately.
  • Stockouts are reported to the Materials Handler and Supervisor.
  • Requestor informed of which other departments to contact regarding supplies we do not issue.
  • When assigned, makes rounds of identified nursing units and returns used instruments to CSP.
  • Turnover the used instruments as soon as possible.
  • Technician should prepare all items needed for patient care and surgery, sterile and CSP applicable supplies and instruments immediately
  • Perform the required quality monitoring of equipment, instruments and supplies for cleaning and decontamination.
  • Cleaning/disinfecting agents are mixed, stored, and used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and departmental guidelines.
  • Proper protective attire is worn at all times in the decontamination area.
  • Equipment is inspected for general structural integrity and for safety of operation.
  • Defective equipment is removed from service and sent/taken for repair.
  • Followup with the repair status of defective equipment.
  • Identify temporary replacements of defective equipment as needed.
  • Check rigid containers and other types of packaging methods for integrity.
  • Inspect instruments and defective instruments are removed from service and sent/taken for repair.
  • Assemble instrument sets accurately.
  • Locates and/or appropriately identifies and communicates any missing items from items and/or trays being packaged.
  • Obtains proper approval from the identified shift personal and/or supervisor prior to packing a product that has missing item(s).
  • Use pouches and instrument wraps appropriately.
  • Complete the instrument list accurately.
  • Label instrument sets and other CSP provided items correctly.
  • Appropriately puts away any extra supplies and instrumentations to the identified locations each and every time.
  • Stockout and supply shortages are reported promptly to the Supervisor.
  • Manufacturer instructions and departmental guidelines for equipment maintenance and operation are followed at all times.
  • Equipment and carts are loaded properly.
  • Performs complete and accurate documentation, and verifications of all required physical, chemical, and biological monitors
  • Problems are corrected/reported promptly to the Sterile Processing supervisor and appropriate personnel as necessary.
  • Items are assembled/wrapped correctly according to approved protocol.
  • The required tests and equipment monitoring are performed and analyzed according department frequency and protocols: Bowie-Dick Test, Biological monitoring, equipment validations.
  • Assemble case carts according to pick sheets, accurately and completely.
  • Cover completed case carts if applicable.
  • Transport case carts to the OR and/or any other areas as assigned.
  • Complete case carts in appropriate order.
  • The records are maintained in the prescribed formats and turned in on time.
  • Review accuracy and completeness of records and documentation of required test.
