    About The Gübelin Gem Lab

    The Gübelin Gem Lab was founded in 1923 as a small gemmological laboratory to examine and determine the authenticity of the stones used in Gübelin's jewellery. This was a way to maintain the trust of its clients and stay true to its ideals. Since then the Gübelin Gem Lab has grown to become one of the most respected institutions of its kind in the world. A completely independent subsidiary of the Gübelin Group, the Gübelin Gem Lab uses the latest science and state-of-the-art equipment to carry out its analyses. On the basis of this it issues its highly respected Gemmological Reports, which are relied upon by famous auction houses, royal families, jewellers, gem traders, and collectors globally who are looking for unbiased, independent and absolutely trustworthy opinions about their gems.

    What We're Looking For

    The Gübelin Gem Lab in New York is looking to hire a new lab technician to help run tests on gemstones and train to become one of our prestigious gemmologists.

    We're looking for someone with a gemmological background, interested in learning about gemstone origin and treatment determination, and who would be looking to grow with our NY office, first operating our machinery and eventually training to be a Lab Gemmologist.

    Responsibilities

    The lab technician is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all gemmological testing equipment. Technicians will:

    • Operate XRF, UV-VIS and FTIR machines in the testing of gemstones. (training provided)
    • Initiate startup and shutdown procedures on machines
    • Organize workflow of gemstones throughout the laboratory
    • Order supplies as related to machines
    • Communicate with internal IT department and analytics department to make sure machines are running correctly
    • Communicate with external service providers in case repairs are needed.
    • Travel to trade shows and for training domestically and internationally
    • Undergo gemmology training, and learn spectral analysis (in time)

    Qualifications

    We're looking for someone with a passion for gemstones, gemmology and geology with the following background:

    • GIA or FGA qualified gemmologist certification or BS in Geology
    • Knowledge of gemstones, earth sciences
    • Gemstone Laboratory experience a plus
    • Experience with software such as MS Excel

    Salary

    This is generally an entry level position with salary from 50k-65k depending on experience. We may be open to a more experienced gemmolgist as well.
