Emergency Telecommunications Call Taker
:
Salary $44, $53,950.00 Annually


  • Receives and processes all emergency and nonemergency requests for service. Determines the appropriate response required and the need for prearrival instructions. Serves as the first point of contact with callers. Processes requests for service via 911 and other phone lines, for police, fire, and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) emergencies. Questions the caller to determine nature of incident and refers the caller appropriately.

_ After the successful completion of a six (6) month probationary period, Call Takers are eligible:_- To be placed on a promotional list for Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher Trainee. If hired before June 30, 2024, for a $ $1,000.00 Bonus (depending on certification status)* and an additional for a $ $1,000.00 Bonus after twelve (12) months of service


Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher Trainee:

Salary $50, $52,065.00 Annually**- Receives and processes all emergency and non-emergency requests for service. Determines the appropriate response required and the need for pre-arrival instructions. Broadcasts messages to Police, Fire, and EMS units to respond to requests for service. Processes requests for information such as record checks and stolen car listings. Maintains contact with Field Units and maintains records of units in or out of service. Operates radio, Computer Aided Dispatch System and other communications equipment.

Performs related work as required.
_ After the successful completion of a nine (9) month probationary period, Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher Trainees__ will be eligible:_**- To be automatically promoted to Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher (
$57,642.00-$69,745.00 Annually).


  • If hired before June 30, 2024, $1,500.00$2,000.00 Bonus (depending on certification status)* and an additional $1,500.00$2,000.00 after twelve (12) months of service.
- "Certified" is defined as holding a current State of Connecticut Telecommunicator Certification, Collect/NCIC Certification AND EMD Certification.

These positions are in the 1716 union position. The hours of the position are 40 per week. This position requires working holidays, weekends and shift work. Additional earning potential exists with overtime, shift differential and holiday pay.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • The examination will consist of a computerized written test, a performance test, a typing test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position.

The examination is designed to measure:
typing speed and accuracy; prioritization; multitasking; data entry; memory recall; comprehension; probability; and decision-making.

Qualifications:


Open to all applicants who meet the following qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or GED.

A COPY OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, GED CERTIFICATE OR TRANSCRIPT MUST BE ATTACHED TO YOUR APPLICATION. A DEGREE OR TRANSCRIPT SUBMITTED WILL BE VERIFIED BY THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.




SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Call Taker


  • Must successfully complete the mandated State of Connecticut Telecommunications Certification within one year of employment. Must successfully complete a State of Connecticut recognized Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Course selected by the Department.




SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Dispatcher Trainee


  • If appointed, you must successfully complete Telecommunicator State Certification, NCIC/ COLLECT certification, and a Stateapproved emergency medical dispatch course within nine (9) months of appointment date. _A valid driver's license preferred._

  • Preferential Points may be given to Eligible Veterans. Must submit a Veteran's Preference Form, along with a DD214 and Disability letter (if applicable) from the Office of Veteran's Affairs.
