The Institute for Surface Technology in Mechanical Engineering is a leading research institution in the fields of PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) technology, thermal spraying, hard and brazing, as well as modeling and simulation of these processes in basic and applied research in cooperation with industrial partners.

At the Institute for Surface Technology, material science fundamentals are developed and applied to material technologies from project ideas to complete system solutions and series production.

This is achieved through the use of state-of-the-art production and testing equipment, as well as a variety of analysis methods in the field of material and process characterization.

The institute has both common and specialized simulation tools, as well as a modern computing infrastructure for conducting simulations.

The R&D group for PVD tools at the Institute for Surface Technology focuses on the design, development, and deposition of novel oxide and nitride PVD coating systems on tools, as well as the development and improvement of PVD processes within the fields of primary and secondary forming and machining.

The titanium alloy TiAl6V4 is an important structural material in the aerospace industry. However, high-performance machining of titanium components with high efficiency requires tools with high demands. To increase productivity, PVD coatings are increasingly being used in titanium machining. Previous projects at the IOT have already demonstrated the potential of CrAlN-based coatings for turning titanium alloys. In a further research project, the transfer of these findings to milling processes under industrial machining conditions
