Laboratory Manager - San Antonio, United States - Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)

    Default job background
    Full time
    Description

The lab of Dr. Reuben Harris at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is looking for a focused, meticulous, and enthusiastic Lab Manager to support day-to-day operations. The Harris Lab seeks to understand how DNA mutating-enzymes (APOBECs) provide immunity against viral infections, yet also contribute to tumor evolution through genomic DNA mutagenesis. The work of the lab aims to translate its fundamental discoveries into novel therapeutics against viruses and cancer. More information can be found on their website.

    About the Role:

You will hold a key role – managing the day-to-day operations involved in running the lab, serving as a collaborative partner to Dr. Harris, being the primary liaison between the lab and various external partners (UT San Antonio administrative offices, HHMI science operations offices, etc.). A successful candidate will have a background in the health or life sciences and be committed to encouraging a collaborative, thoughtful work environment. Due to the fast-paced nature of the work of the lab, ideal candidates are people who thrive in a constantly evolving environment and who have a proven track record of multitasking, as well as a desire to be a part of a community. This role is best fit for someone who is a self-starter and proactive in their support style – and someone who is passionate about the research work that the lab is conducting.

    What We Provide:
    • A competitive compensation package with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
    • Joining the vibrant lab whose science has far-reaching implications on the world of disease, with an opportunity to work directly on the science
    • Access to HHMI's Udemy on-demand training courses and interactive skill-building seminars taught by members of our learning and organization development team.
    • Opportunities for professional development and growth.
    • Close collaboration with and direct mentorship from Dr. Harris
    What You'll Do:
    • Managing the lab budget to ensure all available funds are effectively and appropriately used.
    • Coordinating equipment acquisition and maintenance processes.
    • Ordering, receiving and managing lab supply inventory
    • Writing/renewing regulatory protocols (IBC, IRB, and IACUC) and submitting amendments.
    • Write animal protocols and ensuring compliance with institutional and Federal guidelines, including DEA and Texas state registrations, environmental health and laboratory safety, and animal care regulations.
    • Assist with editing grants, manuscripts, proposals, presentations, and other documents. Ensure that deadlines for grant application submissions and progress reports are met.
    • Serve as primary point of contact for all lab communications, collaborating closely with vendors, maintenance of inventories, service contracts, repairs of equipment, infrastructure needs, etc.
    • Training and supervising research assistants to perform lab operations tasks.
    • Collaborating with People & Culture for various human resources duties including performance evaluations, promotions, raises, and employee relations issues.
    • Ensuring all of the lab members are trained and follow the safety guidelines.
    • Working alongside Dr. Harris to discuss, understand, and manage short-term and long-term laboratory needs.
    What You Bring:
    • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in life sciences is required. Applicants with graduate degrees are also welcome and encouraged to apply.
    • A demonstrated ability working in an academic research laboratory with at least 5 years performing in a supervisory/lab management role.
    • Experience with budget management is required.
    • Experience with generating mouse models would be a plus.
    • Fluency in Spanish a plus
    • Solid understanding of Microsoft Office and relevant operational software programs.
    • Strong sense of self-motivation, integrity, trustworthiness, and demonstrated ability to work well in a diverse environment with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
    • Passion for efficiency, operational excellence, and process improvement.
    • Ability to work independently and prioritize.
    • Ability to develop and train members of the research group.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
    Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
