Job Summary
The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE)-Georgia Virtual School (GaVS) is hiring for an experienced Student Services Specialist.

Under broad supervision, plans, coordinates, oversees and may develop requested improvement team activities in a variety of education program entities.

This position will perform needs assessment, curriculum audits, effectiveness studies, facilitation of educational planning, resource networking and awareness sessions with entity personnel.

May serve as lead worker.

The job responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Description of Duties

  • Work collaboratively with local schools and internal Georgia Virtual School (GaVS) faculty and staff to provide appropriate service and support to students with varying needs and in extenuating circumstances
  • Maintain a caseload of students and ensures compliance with state and federal legislation
  • Analyze data to make informed decisions to support struggling students as necessary for each individual situation
  • Implement the Section 504 process for home and private school students who are suspected of or have been identified as students with a disability or chronic illness and participate in IEP and Section 504 meetings for public school students, as needed
  • Develop and implement training opportunities to meet specific needs of (GaVS) teachers and staff
  • Collaborate with and/or represents the student services team for various initiatives/events, including but not limited to conferences, webinars, accreditation, meetings, professional learning, and required trainings
  • Work to maintain a positive school climate and assists to develop team processes for maintaining the best possible environment for learning for all of our students
  • Establish and maintain positive and supportive working relationships with coworkers and supervisors
  • Keep abreast of developments and issues in Special Education and Section 504 law and other related areas
  • Continue own personal professional development through participation in conferences, webinars, courses, trainings, and reading
  • Show a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and participate in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning
  • Serve as a mandatory reporter and commit to completing training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

  • Online teaching experience, preferably with Georgia Virtual School
  • Teaching experience at the middle and/or high school level
  • Knowledge and effective use of technology platforms, especially the Microsoft Suite, student information systems, and learning management systems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have a valid Georgia Certification in Special Education General Curriculum

This is a remote/telework position based in Downtown Atlanta. This position is for internal Georgia Department of Education employees only.

Master's degree in education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Four years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Six years of related experience.
