Description
The Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) seeks a part-time qualified Deaf Interpreter.

You will interpret for MCDHH staff as well as community assignments in medical and mental health settings, press conferences, platform assignments, and others assigned by the Referral Department or the Director of Communication Access Services.

As a part-time Deaf Interpreter, you will work primarily in the Boston/Southeastern part of Massachusetts to cover assignments primarily but not exclusively in the Boston/SE region


_ Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all-inclusive)__:_**- Provide various interpretation/transliteration services for deaf/hard of hearing staff members and others through telephone conversations, community interpreting, VLOGs, and other ASL projects through training, staff, or client meetings.

  • Interpreter services provided using American Sign Language, Englishbased sign systems, spoken English, pantomime, gesture, lip movements without voice, or other modes to facilitate communication between deaf, latedeafened, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, and hearing people.
  • Acts as a backup interpreter in special situations for regionally based staff interpreters.
  • Provide interpretation/transliteration services for outside emergencies during normal business hours.
  • Ensures accurate communication between deaf/hard of hearing and hearing individuals taking into consideration the cultural and linguistic differences.
  • Draft activity reports for the number of hours of interpreting provided. Submits reimbursement information and other pertinent information when appropriate.
  • Assists agency staff as requested with special projects and assignments related to the field of interpreting and/or services for deaf/hard of hearing individuals.

_Required Qualifications__:

_**- Ability to interpret/transliterate in the business setting and in situations including, but not limited to, commissioner-level meetings, conferences, staff meetings, etc.


  • Knowledge of both formal and informal registers of English and American Sign Language as appropriate for different settings.
  • Indepth knowledge and adherence to the RID-NAD Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Mastery of specialized vocabulary for both languages (English and ASL): technical, medical, scientific, etc.
  • Proven ability to perform simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, depending on the situation.
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to cultural and historical references in both deaf and hearing cultures.
  • Capacity to interact effectively with many kinds of individuals in various settings.
  • Skilled in presenting self in a favorable way to reflect the agency and profession.
  • Willingness to work varied hours and to travel within the state.

_Preferred Qualifications__:
_**- Knowledge of the MCDHH Interpreter Services' policies and procedures.

  • Understanding of the executive, legislative and judicial systems within the Commonwealth.
  • Increased experience and/or training to upgrade interpreter skills.
  • Expertise in relationship building and effective collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • High level of selfmotivation and accountability, bringing enthusiasm and energy to team and tasks.
  • Detailoriented and highly organized, with strong ability to successfully multitask.

Qualifications - External

Minimum Entrance Requirements:


At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience providing interpretation and/or transliteration services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population after successful completion of the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Screening.
