Mental Health Counselor
REPORTS TO
Supervisor
POSITION PURPOSE
Mental Health Counseling is to work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and to promote mental health.
They are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, and grief.
They also help with job and career concerns, educational decisions, mental and emotional health issues, and relationship problems. In addition, they may be involved in community outreach, advocacy, and mediation activities.Mental health counselors often work closely with other mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, and school counselors.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
A master's degree from an accredited university or college with a major in counseling, social work, psychology.
EXPERIENCE
Previous mental health experience providing counseling in the areas of substance abuse, domestic violence, sexual trauma, disruptive behaviors, attachment issues, anger management etc.
KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE

- Is knowledgeable of and comply with state and federal statutes, rules and policies that affect the target population.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY TO POSITION
Facilitates individual therapy sessions for children and adults
Administers and interprets trauma assessment instruments for child and adolescent victims.
Develops treatment plans:
b. Trauma focused therapeutic groups for children and adolescents.
c. Play therapy for children ages 3 to 12, as appropriate.
d. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for parents and children, when appropriate.
e. Family therapy sessions.
- Participates in regular multidisciplinary team meetings at CBHS
- Makes appropriate referrals for victims and families psychological and psychosocial needs prior to the termination of treatment.
- Maintains service records and statistics.
- Participates in clinical supervision at least monthly with Senior Full-Time Therapist,.
- Consult with Licensed Psychologist or Psychiatrist when necessary and appropriate.
